How Safe Are Our Children In India?

Published on: 26 December , 2017 | Ekta

Almost every other week, I open the newspapers and there it is! Yet another headline about an accident or crime where the victim is a young child. Almost all recent incidents have occurred at renowned schools and childcare centres - the horrifying murder of an 8-year boy at a Delhi school, rape of a 5-year old soon after has petrified parents all over the country and really made me question: "How safe is my child when he/she is away from me"? How Safe Are Our Children In India? Whether both parents are working or if even one is a stay-at-home parent, children's lives outside the home are so busy with school, hobby/sports classes or tuitions, parents these days really struggle to keep tabs on their children everyday and constantly worry about safety. Every time your kid is late from tuition classes or wanders away from you in a shopping mall or a crowded place, it's enough to get your heart pounding with fear and the mind thinking the worst. While it isn’t practically possible to shield your child all the time, can we do more to ensure our child’s safety & security? Yes! In today's world that is constantly shrinking, technology is bringing people closer. Let me introduce you to a fantastic “GPS Tracking Device” that ensures your child is safe and secure even when you are not around. Meet MySpottr, the brainchild of Sapan, Pallavi & Birendra who help you be with your most beloved one even when you are physically not with them. And here's the most unique thing about MySpottr: not only is it a user-friendly location tracker, it can also be used as a communication device. So many parents today want to stay in touch with kids but are reluctant to give them mobile phones at a very young age. It's an essential parenting tool for busy parents who always want to be in the loop of their kids activities. MySpottr is a very user friendly GPS Tracker with 2-way calling designed specifically for kids. Here’s what we love about it –
  1. Safety – Children are surrounded by all things fancy such as the iPhone, iPad, YouTube and Xbox! With our lifestyle sailing towards a digital world, the least we expect is that technology does not harm our child. Let’s put a BIG tick against “Safety” since MySpottr is RoHS & CE certified at par with global standards, updating your child’s location every 3-4 minutes keeping radiation in control.
  2. Simple & Super sturdy – It’s a black device, the size of a match box! It has a single “SoS” button, with an in-built Sim card & speaker. During your child’s “Panic Mode”, it isn’t practical to expect your child to remember your mobile number and call for help.
  3. Device Features – Kids will be kids so thankfully MySpottr is water resistant! The device has a clean structure & design and is resistant to damage from kids’ rough handling. You can mark your child’s “SAFE ZONES” like school, tuition classes, cricket/dance class to track your child’s movement. If your child deviates from the stamped ‘SafeZone’ you will immediately get a notification & you can call your child to check if he/she is safe.
  4. Battery & Location Accuracy – The battery lasts for 50 hours (and upto a massive 120 hours if your child’s movement is less active) and can be easily recharged quickly. The device is fairly accurate even in low connectivity areas - it’s smart and guesses your location; especially around the SafeZones you've created
  5. Circle Of Trust – When your child presses the “SOS” button, it’s not necessary that you may always be available to receive the call, given all parents have more on their plate than they can handle. You may be packing lunch for your husband or just taking a short nap after working relentlessly from 6am to 3pm. So what happens if you miss the call when your child needs you the most? Here comes the “Circle Of Trust” – MySpottr is the only “calling service” in India where you can download the App (available in iOS & Android) & feed the numbers of your “1st point of contact” (and so on) in the order of your choice. To cite an example my order is –

Mother (Me) → Father → Grand-Father → >Grand-Mother

Hence, if the “SoS” button is pressed, the first call goes to the “Mother”, if that goes unattended, then it goes to the “Father” and so on, until the call is answered. Hence, do not fret, the call is automatically forwarded to the assigned numbers and the MySpottr service keeps calling UNTIL someone picks up the child's SoS call! What could have been better?
  1. If the device had come with a clip that can be attached to the pocket or bag to ensure it doesn’t drop off, considering, children are playful, will help minimize the chances of losing the device. However, the MySpottr team is committed to shipping out the next batch of devices with clips.
  2. While the Indian strata sees most families with two kids, it would have been fantastic to have a facility of opting for two devices at a discounted rate, to ensure both your children are safe. The team has taken this suggestion seriously and I hope to see this being implemented soon :)
I believe, our children are exposed to a very treacherous and vulnerable environment relative to 15 years ago. And we as parents should take preventive measures for our child’s safety (given every curious child loves to explore but given our environment is unsafe, a preventive measure is now a must). If you belong to the same school of thought, then you should invest in MySpottr. And the investment is only Rs.250 per month. That’s not much for your child’s safety and your peace of mind, is it now?

It's very difficult to keep children away from phones / tabs these days. I have a 2year old daughter & it takes immense efforts to distract her from the gadgets. Certainly, we as parents wouldn't want to give a mobile phone to them at the age of 5 or 6 to ensure they are safe. MySpottr is one of the Best alternatives.

Yes Papri. I fear the same. Although most schools are guarded & have security cameras, yet, recent incidents at well-established schools have shaken the country.
