Published on: 9 August , 2018 | Tanusri Chakraborty

Almost every new-mommy is worried about is her children’s welfare. Taking care of them and nurturing them with good nutrition is a mother’s foremost thought & priority! Until you are breast-feeding your child (mother’s milk is the only source of nutrition), you don’t have to worry much. But gradually as your infant progresses to the next stage of feeding, the stress of feeding the right food in the right quantity propagates to another level. Here is the recipe of making Sathu Maavu Ingredients – HomeMade Health Mix For Babies. An ever-challenging task at hand for moms is to identify nutritious, healthy and weight gaining options for 6 months+ babies & removing the “external ingredients” or “preservatives” from the equation! Though the market has abundant options when it comes to baby food we really aren’t sure of the quality of ingredients & hygiene of preparation that go into manufacturing these products. Brands like Maggi suffering the burnt of being adulterated, puts everything under the mommy scanner. So, when it is time for your 6 months old baby to start solids, you can very well treat them with some homemade and delicious Sathu Maavu Ingredients – HomeMade Health Mix For Babies. Not only would it be free of additives, synthetic flavors or preservatives but also can be made with organically grown products to enrich its nutritional value. We would want to show you how to make fresh, cost-effective and nutrient-laden Sathu Maavu Powder.

Why Home Made Health Mix Powder?

Homemade instant food mixes or Sathu Maavu Powders are anytime better than their commercial alternatives which are easily available at the supermarket shelves. They have the following benefits over their commercial counterparts.
  1. They are free of storage hassles (do not need a warehouse) and are made fresh and in lesser amounts of quantity which does not need more storage. The commercially made ones need storage in warehouses which can be rodent infested.
  2. Branded mixes come with a long shelf life which is only possible by the addition of preservatives. Feeding preservatives can be harmful to babies at such a tender age.
  3. The readily available mixes on market shelves have also got flavored additives in them and their chemical composition stands unclassified. In other words, you do not know which chemicals you are feeding your baby.
  4. Homemade Sathu Maavu is freshly made and customized as per your baby’s needs ensuring maximum nutrition and nil synthetics. In case your baby is intolerant to certain products those can be omitted out while preparing the powder. Using organic ingredients can increase the food value even further.
  5. Homemade mixes are cost effective and you only pay for the ingredients you have used. The branded versions always charge a whopping amount because they are baby products in the first place and they have to be branded, marketed and advertised as well.
  6. How-so-ever difficult and cumbersome the preparation technique might sound it is nothing in comparison to the joys of feeding ideal nutrition to your baby. The powder can get ready in a jiffy given that the ingredients are kept handy in the first place.
The Process of Making Sathu Maavu Ingredients – HomeMade Health Mix For Babies The procedure is very simple, involving mainly roasting and grinding and of course cleaning ahead of these steps. The entire procedure takes not more than one hour.

Avoid any moisture retention in the utensils to extend the shelf life & avoid spoilage.

How To Make Sathu Maavu

Take all the ingredients as per their quantity in separate bowls and soak them in distilled water (Boiled and cooled down to normal temperature) for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes drain water from the ingredients one by one and spread it on a plate with a clean cloth on top of it. After the water has been drained completely collect on a separate plate and spread under the sun for drying. The ingredients dry out by an hour. Remove the plate from sunlight and bring forward for roasting. Take a clean kadhai or pan and roast the ingredients as per instructions laid down below for roasting.

Roasting

  1. Rice will have to be roasted till it puffs up.
  2. The dal, daliya, ragi, cashew nuts and the corn kernels will all have to be roasted till they turn golden brown.
  3. Roast the sabu dana, horse gram, carom seeds, cumin seeds, and roasted gram till they look crispy.
  4. The green gram will change color from green to mild brown upon roasting.
  5. Cardamom pods and Almonds will have to be roasted till they release their aroma.
Ensure that none of the ingredients get burnt in the roasting process. If burnt, discard the ingredient because it will taste bitter and your baby will not like the taste of his homemade cerelac. Let the ingredients cool down for 15 to 30 minutes.

Grinding

The roasted substances can now be ground either in a powdering mill or blender or mixer at home. In case you have to visit the mill, do get one-kilo rice or wheat ground first to avoid any of the flavors from the mill to pass onto your infant’s mix. It is always safer, cleaner and better to grind your baby food in your home itself. Grind till you get a smooth powder. This powder has a longevity of upto 6 months depending also on the weather etc. A humid weather might cause your powder to get contaminated faster but a dry and hot weather will ensure no contamination for a long time. All you need to do now is to store this mixture in an airtight container to bar any moisture from entering the sathu maavu powder or else this homemade cerelac might get spoiled.
