In an ideal world, sending your kids to school would be as routine an activity as it’s meant to be. But waking up to headlines like, ‘7 year old found murdered in school’, ‘5 year old raped by sweeper in school washroom’ and ‘3 year old assaulted by security guard’, makes it a formidable task for the parents to brace themselves to wave their children goodbye as they leave for school every morning.

You might have CCTV cameras and GPS devices to track, but you cannot ignore the human angle. One of the main reasons parents get restless is the fact that just technology is not enough to safeguard the kids from untoward incidents. Virtually traversing through their activities might not suffice the bid to keep our children safe at school; and this might not even be an infallible approach for certain spots like, say washrooms or deserted corners. If someone is intent on harming, there are many a blind spots, as we have seen in recent cases.

The kids are not just surrounded by teachers and classmates while at school, but also the non-teaching staff providing the support backbone with day-to-day operations, like that of the security guards, van drivers, housekeeping staff, maids, peons, gardeners, maintenance staff and so on. Even though this a very critical function for any school and most times a thankless job, there is no dearth of people with ambiguous and precarious backgrounds here.

Children not safe

In a sample set of 3,000 profiles from 300 pre-schools across India, We found some eye popping insights.

While 8.2% of staff had fake IDs, the percentage of fake DLs was the highest at 32%! What it means is that the details provided in their ID cards (like Aadhaar, Voters ID, PAN, DL, etc) do not match with the original in the government systems. Sometimes the card never even existed. So the person is not whom you think they are.

Similarly, the percentage of people with wrong or untraceable address was 20.7%. What it means is that if you go searching for these people, there is a 1 in 5 chance that you will never be able to locate them.

The worst part was that there were 12 cases of criminals amongst the staff, who had committed some heinous crimes! These were the same people who were in close proximity of our children. The fact that even if the person is fired from one school, they can join another unsuspecting school easily, given the severe shortage of staff, is spine-chilling.

As a parent, I strongly feel that verified and trained staff is sacrosanct for any school, and that security services and staff training should be an essential part of their agenda.

In fact, it holds true even if you think about it from the school’s perspective – the success of a school is also directly proportional to how serious the school is  about their staff, especially the safety and quality angle. Verified staff ensures safety, and trained staff ensures quality.

Misconceptions / myths during pregnancy:

Once a woman is pregnant she will begin to receive well -meaning advice from every nook and cannery. Its’ important however that she filters this information overload and does a reality check to break under mentioned pregnancy myths:

  • Stress during pregnancy is not always bad, on the contrary moderate levels of stress help in toning and developing a fetus’s nervous system.
  • Chocolates eaten during pregnancy are actually good for the baby as they make happy fearless babies and reduce the risk of preeclampsia in the mother too.
  • The fetus is not inert in-fact it is an active being and mother can positively influence him each day.
  • Moderate exercise does no harm but instead helps in fetus’s cardiovascular and mental development.
  • Fetus is not nestled away inside the mother’s uterus unaware of the world outside. On the contrary through mum he encounters the real world even while in the womb.

As the due date of delivery nears a pregnant woman gets concerned on whether she can deliver normally or she will require a C-Section. A normal vaginal delivery has its own set of advantages over a C-section chiefly offering a quicker recovery time to a mother. In these times, in addition to the woman’s health even the preference of her hospital/gynecologist towards the form of delivery plays an important role.

The Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science And Research, New Delhi is a multi -specialty hospital with a strong focus on following evidence –based and ethical medical practices. C – Section:

A C-section is a major surgery and women need to understand not to opt for one when it is possible to have a normal vaginal delivery. Like every other major surgery C-Section also comes with its set of risks. However a C-section sometimes becomes an inevitable tool to deliver a child in cases such as breech baby, placenta previa/abruption, 2 prior C-sections, any invasive uterine surgery, fibroid in mother, baby has a known malformation, HIV –positive mother or baby’s heart rate is concerning. While some hospitals are very commercial in their approach, some Maternity Hospitals still offer services in the best interest of their patients & push for a normal delivery despite complications. Did You Know…Children who eat breakfast regularly perform better at school

Breakfast gives you the “Right Start To The Day”. With unending energy needs for fueling our various activities – running, learning, playing and other exercises, the importance of breakfast and morning nourishment is incomparable. But it is also something that is often over-looked by parents. Remember, nutrients skipped at breakfast do not get compensated during the rest of the day.

Just like how small infants get cranky and cry when they are hungry, our body also translates hunger into various symptoms like restlessness, fatigue, loss of concentration and memory retention. The child who is already hungry after 8-10 hours of sleep needs to “BREAK-the-FAST” to start his active action packed day!

Regular breakfast consumption can work magic for child!  A cup of milk/juice or coffee does not meet the breakfast requirements of nutrients for a child. You, as a parent, should inculcate the right lifestyle, by being an example / role model to your kids and creating awareness around the importance of a balanced breakfast.

Things to remember –

  • Habitual breakfast consumption is positively associated with learning in children in terms of behavior, cognitive and school performance.
  • Regular breakfast consumption helps in managing weight. Skipping breakfast isn’t a weight loss strategy. In fact children who skip the first meal, tend to binge eat on unhealthy food and often consume more calories which may lead to weight gain. This is true for adults too.
  • A breakfast should provide essential nutrients like protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals besides energy. Choose breakfast foods that provide these nutrients to help provide nourishment to the body and boost the activity of the brain. Nutritionists recommend that breakfast should provide for 20 -25% of daily nutritional requirements.
  • Adding a serving of fresh fruit, handful of nuts, yoghurt to your bowl of cereal can make it a balanced breakfast.
  • Breakfast helps kick start our metabolism.

Commonly consumed breakfast options in the country –

1. If you reside in the South, Idly/Dosa/Upma/Vada/Pongal are the staples in every family.
2. Poha & Parathas (Aloo/Gobi/Paneer) with dahi/yoghurt are are also good options

Let’s face the truth – with our crazy schedules, we do not often have time to prepare the breakfast that we would ideally love to have. This is where a breakfast cereal could solve your problems. To be honest, Kellogg’s Corn Flakes has been my favourite since I was a kid. A bowl of cold milk with cornflakes and a generous helping of almonds, fine chopped banana, apple & mango if available seasonally was something I totally relished – be it mornings or evenings! Just thinking about that made me hungry already! Aahhh…
