10 Things Parents REALLY Do On ‘Romantic Dates’

Things aren’t really the same after you have kids. This is an undisputed fact. And while you may discuss about the behavior & activities of your children at school & with family & friends, not much is discussed about how “romantic dates” change with time. Sometimes it is just about spending some time together with your partner without having to deal with children fussing over food, screaming for the third chocolate of the day or resolving sibling fights. But that’s not EXACTLY a date. Although it may feel like one, if parenting has been maddening. So, what do parents REALLY do on a date night?

candle-light-dinner

  • Where To?

You will look up for the latest fine-dining restaurant on Zomato in town, deciding on the cuisine that both of you mutually agree to; but end up driving to the closest one due to paucity of time & anxiousness to rush back home incase of any toddler-emergency.

  • Tick Tock!

You keep looking at your watch, eagerly awaiting to place the order & do not forget to mention & remind the waiter twice to try to get the food ASAP because you have a kid at home. As if seeing the time every 10 minutes will ensure the TIME does not cheat you & fly away!

  • Kids Talk

Just as though the whole day was just not enough, even conversations on a romantic date revolve around strategic ways to encourage your child to outperform at school. Or about how the mother updates the father on the child’s progress/tantrums or even reports on the notorious habit that was picked recently from a fellow friend at school.

  • Lamenting

Well, if it’s not about the kids then it has to be the “in-laws”! You have to admit. Women just can’t stop grumbling about the petty issues they have to deal with in their everyday lives. Saas-bahu ka nok-jhok or the cold air between your co-sister, it all has to come out someday. Ironically, it’s the only time your husband cannot walk out or pretend that he has a call to attend to.

  • Shopping

So the “Romantic Dinner” plan is finally made. But you figure out that your wardrobe has nothing that makes you look sexy. Because, you have not shopped much barring the XL size comfortable clothing. So you decide to instead go to a mall to overhaul your wardrobe & expectdly you end up shopping for your kids more than for yourself. And then, ofcourse, end up eating at the food court. How romantic!

  • World Around

If you have not spent much time together, it’s awkward when you are wondering what to talk. You look around, watching people – what they’re wearing & looking at those who are constantly laughing. You suddenly realize that you have become old(at heart, mind & soul, if not for age) & boring. Exchanging sweet silent smiles, you & your partner try to make conversations to make the ‘date’ feel absolutely normal.

  • Virtual Vacation

If you are not bored to death, figuring out what to talk (because it has been really long since you have spent time with each other), you realize how much you miss those days. So, you plan a honeymoon part-2 vacation(just you and your husband, of course) that will never happen. Because upon arrival, you realize that your notorious child was handful & your mother-in-law has already retired for the day taking care of your brat for 2 hours .

  • Re-sensitize

You finally get a chance to watch A-rated movies like Nasha or B.A Pass to discover how they can re-sensitize you. You want to net flix & chill! And then(as expected), you get a call that your baby won’t stop crying so you need to leave the movie soon after intermission(that’s probably when the movie gets interesting).

  • Binge Eating

You go overboard on pani puri, pizzas, burgers, ice-creams, brownies and all thise foods that are a taboo for kids; because your they aren’t around you to judge you & cite this example later. Binging on all things unhealthy, you had to get down wth diarrhea.

And finally…

  • Lost in Love

Go to a nice roof-top restaurant, laugh innocently on crazy stupid jokes like you were just married. Have a nice hot chocolate fudge with brownie and ice-cream, or something that you have yearned to have for sometime. Come back home, put the kid/kids to sleep. Tug into his arms, feel warm & loved and get a good night sleep. (This can happen occasionally) And, this, my dear friends, is a perfect date!

10-things-parets-really-do-on-romantic-dates1

If you have been on any of these similar “dates”, do not feel terrible. The spark in your relationship may have dimmed but not vanished. And your partner does not love you any less. With time love grows; deeper & stronger. And this is what “Parenting” teaches you. You can also read our blog on “Physical Intimacy around kids – How much is too much?”

Have fun together. Make fun of each other. Take out time to laugh, crack silly jokes & show how much you love your spouse. Someday, when your kids are grown up, you may look back and realize that it was alright to not be a control freak. It was perfectly fine to let loose the shackles occasionally & be an imperfect parent. You can be a great parent. Not a flawless one. So, enjoy your Parenting!

Grandparents – The unsung, unheeded heroes!

It was 10 p.m. I was making a presentation for my next day meeting in my room upstairs. I heard my bhabhi (sister-in-law) talk loudly, in a tone that you’d be convinced that she is rather angry & upset. I ran down to see & discovered that her 1.5 year old, highly energetic daughter had a fall from the sofa in the TV room. I heard my bhabhi tell to my mom “Kya mummy, you were there with her no. How did she fall then? If you were tired or could not take care of her you should have told me.” I was boiling with anger. I could see the fear & remorse deep in my mom’s eyes.

grandparents-the-unsung-heroes

She said feebly – “Sorry beta, Gudiya was jumping from one sofa to another quickly. And suddenly before I knew she stumbled & fell”. My bhabhi was not convinced. Soon, we had the entire family including my elder brother come in to pacify his little angel. Upon explaining what had happened he told Riya – “Sorry Gudiya, dadi didn’t hold you? Did you get hurt?” Feeling completely helpless, my mom contained her despair & locked her tears in her eyes. I seconded mom – “Chill mom. Don’t worry. Children get hurt. There is nothing much we can do about it. Riya is naughty, but strong. She will be fine.” She saw me smiling, trying to appease her.  But, the damage was done. It was irreparable.

To avoid a brawl, my mom left the place & retired for the day. Little did anyone remember that she has been suffering from a bad knee pain. She wanted to tell him that it was unintentional & despite the pain, she tried to hold Riya’s hand. But age was catching up & she was exhausted since the playful kid had been all over the place & grandma had been baby-sitting since over an hour. But she knew, that her son who loved his wife & daughter so much would not pay heed. Agreed, my mom cannot match our vivacity & muster the energy, but her unsurpassed dedication & love missed eyes of many.

That night when I went back to sleep many memories came back to life. How we were taught to ride a bicycle & to play badminton. How mom & dad would take us to the beach every weekend. We were a happy family. My mother seamlessly & efficiently managed to juggle between the household chores & studies with minimum domestic help. She was my role model. I knew I wanted to grow up to be like her.

I see her fine wrinkles, cracked feet & grey hair & realize that after all the hard-work this is not what she deserves. Sadly this is not the story of one house. Everyday, many helpless people are victims of abuse, are rebuked & ill-treated or left to their fates in old-age homes.

I am 23, not married yet. But someday I will. And I will have kids. I will see old age. And that will be no different. The future will be rather worse, not better. Life is a vicious cycle. Children learn from what they see. They are great imitators. You are a mirror to your child! So do not take your parents for granted. They are not baby-sitters. They can do you a favour by taking care of your babies while you are out enjoying your movie, romantic dinner or living your corporate dreams. They are not responsible to raise your kids. Don’t thrust it on them & crib if they don’t want to take up the responsibility.

grandparents-the-unsung-heroes1

When they are 60, all they need is some love & attention. Someone to ask how their day was. They might be in pain, feeling anxious, lonely or concerned about something. Let them know that you care for them. As a parent it is your responsibility to teach them. Undoubtedly our parents can guide us in the right direction, but you have to take the efforts to feed, teach, play & endow them with the value system you are brought up with. We are blessed with parents & in-laws who help us survive pressure at work, emotional & mental trauma or even physical stress when there is work-overload.

This materialistic world has made many young minds insensitive & ungrateful. When you are pregnant, you start envisioning heartwarming scenes of generations bonding. You can’t help but get miffed & bewildered when reality knocks at the door.

GrandParents Day

GrandParents Day falls on 8th Sep. If you would like to Thank (the least you could do) your Dear Grandfather & Grandmother, please take sometime to tell them how much you love them. Spend sometime, play some games, surprise them with playing their favourite good-old songs and see the delight on their face.

Why A Mother Should Not Quit Working? – All Reasons You Need

Taking a break from your professional sphere to nurture your newborn baby, is the best possible feeling. Indeed, the most memorable vacation. Motherhood is a beautiful experience, because you know that your baby needs you in its formative years to foster good health & to build a strong foundation. No one can take care of the baby like a mother does. So, it is imperative to take a maternity leave. But, don’t quit. Why A Mother Should Not Quit Working? Read on.

why-a-mother-should-not-quit-working2

So, how long should you take a maternity break for? 6 months? 1, 2 or 3 years? By the age of 3, you would have enrolled your child in a play school. What’s next? The question comes up sooner or later for nearly every new mommy. Should I quit work to stay at home to take care of my baby? This is an individual’s personal choice. Albeit, it is influenced by your family, to a large extent. Every family is different. And so are their priorities. One of the key factors is how well our family supports us; especially our partner. Taking a long break does not mean the end of your career. You can bounce back & revive your career at any point in life.

A working mommy is often looked down upon by the society for choosing work over family. But, why this prejudice? Why should she be coerced to quit working? We spoke to about 40 women between 25-35 years of age and these were the top responses they mentioned to join the workforce after a maternity break.

Why A Mother Should Not Quit Working? – All Reasons You Need

A happier person – the feeling of empowerment

It is an undisputed fact that life becomes stressful while striving to strike a good work-life balance. On the contrary, research has proved that psychologically, women are happier & develop a sense of empowerment, accomplishment & satisfaction when they continue to work after a maternity break. Appreciation of good work is rewarding for the body, mind & soul. You know that you have utilized your potential to the fullest. A stay-at-home mommy can display traits of low self-esteem, confidence & depression as she relentlessly juggles only between the household chores & nurturing her toddler.

Managing the finances better

If it is fair to expect your husband to help you with changing the nappies, then, it is also fair to expect you to support the finances of the house. While most families in the affluent segment do not encourage women working after the birth of the baby; many middle class families thrive on the husband’s income & need a supporting income to lead a comfortable life. You may largely cut-down on your personal expenses. But does that really suffice to lead a comfortable? In most Indian families, sadly not. From education to healthcare expenses or even taking care of our elders in the family, we need money. If you can contribute by working, you will have a higher disposable income & save more for the future. Eventually, due to less financial pressure & tension, your partner feels more relaxed & spends better quality time with your & your kids.

Independence & Confidence

The “I” in the Individuality & Identity remains intact

Your identity as a wife, a daughter, a mother or a daughter-in-law will undoubtedly be reflected in the way you essay your roles & responsibilities. But, getting back to work gives you a lot more than just monetary benefits – it endows ‘self-esteem’. You derive immense satisfaction & gratification from being able to revive your career & confidence by interacting with colleagues & developing new skills. It saves you from the guilt of being just a helpless home-maker (unless it is by choice). Read how to unshackle & break gender stereotypes!

Learn & evolve

There is no right age or barrier to learn new things. When you are working, your mind is occupied. It is horning its logical/analytical/reasoning skills which is necessary to deal with a specific task. Your zest to learn new things is trampled when you stop working. Developing the right skills will also help you take better joint decisions with your spouse. If you do not fence yourself in the four walls of your home, you will never doubt your credentials. When you encounter versatile situations at office, you augment your personality & groom yourself to be a stronger & smarter person capable of dealing with almost any situation in life. And that, in my opinion is the best learning in life.

The world is a good place to be in

Agreed, no one can take care of your little one the way you do. But, sometimes you have to let go your worries. Your parents may not have the same energy levels to run behind the little brat, but eventually children learn to respect their elders & imbibe better values with their grandparents around. You can send your child to a nice crèche or a day care while you are off to work. You can find one that’s close to your workplace so that you can drop by when-ever required. It is tough, but a rewarding choice as your child learns to develop social skills – playing together & sharing together. Skills that will last a lifetime! Feeding your baby breakfast & dinner yourself can make up for good nutrition for the day. Thankfully, companies are very supportive by offering extended maternity leave, flexi-work options or work from home (in some cases) are enforced to retain good employees. So, weigh your options before deciding to quit.

Become a “Jack of all trades”

The never ending turmoil of dealing with duties at home & at office can take a toll on your mental peace & health occasionally. But, dedicated efforts to deliver the best, with aplomb has a stupendous impact on your children. When your child observes that you manage your personal & professional life seamlessly & efficiently, you become their role model. Proper planning establishes an equilibrium & you can prove to your family & the society that marriage & children need not hinder your growth in the professional space.

P.S – It is not necessary for you to be a working mother to be an inspiration to your kids. However, an unhappy home-maker, fighting with her own blues cannot bring a positive vibe to the family.

Independence & Confidence

Working like a robot, doing monotonous work incessantly at home may start making you feel that you are not worthy enough. Unquestionably, your husband maybe happy to pay your credit card bills. However, it is very liberating when you can bear your own expenses. You can spend almost guilt-free. You will start valuing money much more – because you have worked hard for it (which is a blessing in disguise). So it is a win-win situation! Most importantly, your family will not be jeopardized if your husband loses his job. You are always there to complement the finances.

Build stronger social connections & a better social life

“Life changes completely after marriage” – You lose touch with many friends. And with most after you have a baby. Although, you love your little one the most, you will realize sooner or later, that no matter how busy you get, no matter how much joy your bundle of joy brings to your life, YOU FEEL LONELY sometimes! Socializing with people of your age, with people from different walks of life broadens your perspective. We learn, we laugh, we talk, we share. And that’s what makes every person happy.

Research has proved that a mother’s decision to continue to work or stay at home is not a good predictor of how her children will turn out, for better or worse (unless they are given substandard care). The ill-effects of over-parenting is known to all. The chances of over-parenting are far higher if you are a stay-at-home mommy, because your child is your only focus. Working broadens your horizon, your lenses & skill-set. A woman who leaves her child at the day care doesn’t love her child any less. Why add to her guilt? The society should cease to be judgmental. As a mother, you should consider all the variables & then follow your gut!

Health Benefits of Ragi/Millet

Health Benefits of Ragi/Millet

Ragi is a super food and there’s good reason for it too! Ragi contains high levels of Vitamin C that enable the easy absorption of iron. Ragi in its sprouted form can be very beneficial to a growing body as it is also low in fat and helps to keep the body cool too.

Ragi also packs in the following health benefits:

  1. Immunity Builder: Little children often fall sick; especially whenever there’s a change in weather or on occasions such as beginning of school and the like. Consumption of ragi can help in building up the immunity levels of your little one. More so even pregnant women can consume ragi to strengthen their unborn baby’s immune system in the womb.
  2. Maintains blood sugar level: Ragi is rich in fibres and these fibres help in lowering cholesterol levels and also maintain the sugar level in the body. Ragi consumption is ideal for those pregnant women who have gestational diabetes as ragi in its several forms can help to control the body’s blood sugar level.
  3. High Calcium and Iron content: Calcium and iron are vital to the growth and development of children. Also lactating mothers will find ragi to be a welcome addition to their daily meal plan due to its high calcium and iron content which in turn will improve the production of blood and rule out iron deficiency.
  4. Easy to digest: Ragi is light on the tummy, so is easy to digest by both kids and adults alike. Ragi is also a natural laxative which works at keeping the gut healthy. It has non- acidic and non-glutinous properties making it an ideal food choice for the little tummy.
  5. High on Nutrition: Children must be fed food that is high on nutrition and one that fosters healthy growth and development. Ragi prevents malnutrition and is an ideal weaning food that helps baby feel full and satiated.
  6. Feeling of fullness: The complex carbohydrates and glucose found in ragi are released very slowly in to the blood upon consumption without overloading the body in any form. This gives a feeling of fullness for a longer duration. Ragi thus becomes ideal even for adults who are trying to lose weight and eat food that is light, healthy and nutritious. In addition to this Ragi also contains Tryptophan (an amino acid) which helps to curb the appetite upon consumption.

How to make home-made Ragi sprouted flour?

How to make home-made Ragi sprouted flour?

Ragi flour that is beneficial to both kids and adults can be prepared right at your home too. Following are the step by step instructions:

Step1: It’s very important to ensure that both your hands and the ragi seeds that you are using are thoroughly clean. Wash the ragi seeds thoroughly until running water and thereafter with clean drinking water and soak them overnight.

Step 2: The next afternoon drain out all the excess water from the ragi seeds. Take a perforated utensil and line it with a muslin cloth (you may also use a large handkerchief for this). Once water completely drains out from the ragi seeds put them on to this muslin cloth. Tie it up and place it in a warm place in the kitchen and make sure it stays there undisturbed for 12 hours to help it sprout well. During winters it may be a little difficult to sprout the seeds and in such a case keep it longer in a warm place.

Step 3: The next day you will find little sprouts appearing out of the ragi seeds. Take these out of the cloth and spread them evenly on a mat/tray. These sprouts now need to be dried. You may either sun dry them or dry them indoors under the fan (I have a pigeon menace in my city so I dry the seeds under the fan).  Make sure to completely dry the ragi and ensure there’s no moisture left in the sprouts.

Step 4: Once the ragi is completely dry you will proceed to make flour out of it. To this end heat a large pan and add the dry ragi into it to roast the seeds well. Keep it on a low flame and keep stirring to ensure it gets evenly roasted. Let the roasted seeds cool down completely

Step 5: The next step is to make the ragi flour. You may either make this at your home using a blender/mixie or even take it to the flour mill depending on the quantity you have on hand. If you are using a mixie make sure that it does not get overheated. Put the ragi seeds in to the mixie and add a little ginger and elachi powder to it (optional). Blend this well until you get a powder consistency. Ragi powder is now ready.

Step 6: Let the powder cool down. You have to then put it into a fine mesh (the one you use for all- purpose flour) and sieve it well to ensure there are no lumps in your powder. This ragi powder can be stored in an air-tight container for use at any later time.

How long does the Ragi Powder last?

Home-made Ragi powder is a boon to mothers who are wary of using packaged foods for their babies. It is also a food item that can be cooked instantly, with several variations and can be made into a delicious recipe even as you hold on to your crying infant.

The home – made ragi powder is robust and can last you well for 2-3 months when stored in a clean, dry and air tight container. You can easily store it at room temperature with your other kitchen essentials. If however you want it to last longer or you have a larger quantity on hand then you may always put it into the refrigerator where it will stay good for 6 months. While doing this don’t forget to label the bag with date and contents.

You may come up with unique recipes that match your child’s taste buds using your home-made ragi powder. These recipes can be made wholly out of ragi flour only or you may mix other flours/ingredients to bring about variations.

Should children payback to their parents for raising them?

Parents shower all their love and resources to do the best possible for their children. Not because they have to, but because they want to & they love to. Moral responsibility and unconditional love for their kids makes them go that extra mile to ensure you get everything you deserve & desire. So, should children payback to their parents for raising them? “Payback” maybe defined as “to give something in return for the goods, services or investment rendered”.

While the answer maybe debatable & influenced by several personal experiences & relationships that your may have experienced, the blinded lady of justice, who represents objectivity and impartiality will tend to destroy diplomacy & give her final verdict that a kind & rational human will agree to.

To give back to your parents is not a compulsion. In today’s generation parents have few or no expectations. But the unwritten code of ethics says you must pay back to the one who has dedicated an entire lifetime to nurture you. A payback cannot sustain if it is performed as a favour. Raising kids is not a business transaction. It must be done out of love & gratitude. Ironically, the world means something else to them once they grow up and have kids of their own.

should-children-payback-to-their-parents-for-raising-them

Our geriatric parents at some point, will need not just financial support but also mental & psychological support to deal with their health issues. Depression, Alzheimer’s, Diabetes, Heart problems or any other ailment requires personal love and care that only your own family can understand & take care.

In my personal opinion, not many parents want a monetary payback. Infact, children cannot payback to their parents. Even if you want to. Because you can never gauge the enormous effort they have taken to give you all happiness they could. Instead, they want an emotional support. They want to continue staying with their children. They want to watch their grandchildren grow & play. So if you want to payback. This is the least you can do.

  1. Pay them GRATITUDE. Be thankful for all their relentless hard work & sacrifice.
  2. Pay them RESPECT. By the time you have a kid, they probably are in the 3rd innings of their life & yearn for love & respect. If you don’t respect them, no one will.
  3. Pay them LOVE. You don’t refrain from displaying love to your 5-year old son. Why shy away from showing some love to your 50-year old dad? Because you feel awkward?
  4. Pay them TIME. “I don’t have time” – a phrase used by every person you have possibly met. All that your parents need, is your love & time. Call them atleast once a day or pay a visit every week if you do not stay together.
  5. Pay them HEED. Value their opinions. Experience teaches you more than management books. Involving them in taking important decisions will help you lead a better life. Guaranteed.
  6. Pay them HAPPINESS. Happiness is taking your grandmom out for an evening walk. Happiness is buying grandpa a new pair of shoes. Small things make them happy. Their blessings is worth a million.

Children learn a lot more from what they see & hear rather than what they are told. They learn from our behavior; from how their parents treat their grand-parents at old age. If you as a mother are not willing to take care of your in-laws (husband’s father & mother) affectionately & unconditionally, how can you expect your children to take care of you? After all, what goes around, comes around. We should teach them to complete the circle when their time comes. It is the complex web of reciprocity that has kept us united.

Let’s face the reality. With the current rate of inflation & the ever soaring cost of living, managing finances for your own children is challenging. They abandon their parents when the medical bills become heavy on the pockets. Parents can be a role model by giving equal importance & love to both their elders & children. Shockingly, it is epidemically true that many young adults feel that they are not bound to take care of their parents. They make loaded remarks like – “We did not ask to be born. We are not liable to take care of them.” Sadly, many couples still wish for a son as they feel he will grow up to take care of them when they become old. Boys are considered assets. Because a son helps with finances & survival of the family. And girls, in many rural & urban families, even today, a liability.

Should children payback to their parents

Parenting is a “pass it on” feature of life. What happens when this legacy does not continue? What happens when children choose to disown their parents & live their own life? They become extremely selfish. Also, grandchildren in the presence & guidance of grandparents are grounded & build a better value system.

A misbehaved, troublesome or dumb child was never deserted by his parents. Then why would you dump your elders/parents into an old age home? Even if they overcome the poor hygiene conditions, they don’t overcome the pain of ungrateful children who don’t have time to even visit their parents occasionally.
A mirror will always smile back at you if you were smiling. So, always be good to others. You are going to attract the positive vibes & life will be beautiful. As the famous saying goes, “What you sow, you shall reap”. Take the trouble of being a great child. Inspire others. Be a role model. A happy family is a dream & for a million other families. One day you will have a family of your own. You will grow old. You will need someone to lean on. During that phase, your life pays back for the relationships you shared with your family & friends. Your future depends a lot on how you are in your present. So how do you want your future to be?

Is Hindi an endangered language? Does your child struggle to speak in Hindi?

India is known for its “Unity in Diversity”. Rich in heritage, values & culture; it is the home to 780 different languages. Shockingly, a recent survey says that 220 languages have died in the last 5 decades. And, let’s face it – Hindi is on the verge of extinction. Although Hindi is a feeder language to over 100 other languages in the North, the bleak scenario of the language only reminds us of the unkind truth. But why is “Hindi” an endangered language? Why does your child struggle to speak in Hindi? In the late 1970’s it was considered fashionable to speak in English. Very soon English medium schools started sprouting all over the country & it soon became a status symbol to study in one.

Why Is “Hindi” an endangered language? Why Does your child struggle to speak in Hindi?

The optimists say that the rich language shall not die. The adaptability and elasticity of the language will help it survive. But how? Languages can’t be preserved or kept alive in dictionaries & libraries. They live if people continue to talk in their mother tongue. English is the international language of global commerce and finance, thus, most jobs require mastery over the language. With more and more  youngsters adapting to English the stunted growth of the language is ailing in all respects of life. Let’s see how –

At home

Your children can barely talk 2 sentences in Hindi. It’s not surprising to hear you child say “Mom, kal holiday hai. Please late uthana”. Is it English or Hinglish? (English+Hindi)

At School

Those who took pride in their language started to worry when students were not offered Hindi as a compulsory subject especially for the science students. This marked the decline of not just the language, but the society as a whole.

At Work

A strong command over English is a precedent for a well-paying, high-end job at work. Fluency in English means sophistication & a grow the in the organisation.

Entertainment

The film industry is a great example of how the society has evolved. The Hindi ‘movie’ posters are written in English these days. The songs are also adulterated with foreign words. Consider the songs – “My name is Sheila… Sheila ki Jawani” or “Wanna be my Chammak Challo”. And, ironically these songs top the chartbusters. Do we have any good writers at all? We have movies being made on famous English novels. But when have we seen movies made on famous Hindi novels. Hardly any, may be none!

Literature

The unsettling reality of metros and towns has influenced the English-medium educated youth to look down upon those who do not speak English as rustics. Even the Hindi newspapers up-north have started introducing bilingual tabloids which are doing very well since it has a mix of Hindi & English. This trend clearly states the gloomy fate of our language in the urban & rural landscape.

Having embraced the truth, we need to ask ourselves, how do we preserve our language? How do we save it from becoming extinct? Do we want the same fate for Hindi as we saw for Sanskrit? Although we all speak so fluently in English, thankfully, we still pray & sing our hymns in our regional languages. Undoubtedly, English has helped our nation progress phenomenally in the scientific & technology space. But with this development, Hindi is losing its sheen & might just become a rural language spoken by few.

How to revolutionize the change? The answer is to begin from home. With your children. Because they are the future. We have several books written in Hindi which are becoming a breeding ground to dust & mites in the loft. They are probably old school. If we want today’s children to take an interest in learning their own native language, we need to go that extra mile to make it interesting for them. With your support, you can bring back the “Lost Paradise” to life.

But how? How to conserve Hindi from becoming an endangered language for your child at home? This was the question I asked myself. My child was not going to read boring books or newspapers in Hindi. They have enough to read at school. We needed something more. That’s when I googled for something interesting online. For the next-gen savvy kid who is glued to the digital world, “Digital” was the solution. I stumbled upon a website which focuses on bilingual linguistic content for children to strengthen their language skills. The highlight was that over 75% of their articles or content is supported by an audio or a video.

It is a known fact that children learn a lot more from what they see & hear relative to what they read. It is indeed show time! That’s when I discovered Neev Magazine. ‘Neev’ in Hindi means ‘foundation’. That struck the right chord for me. I wanted to build a strong foundation for my child & cultivate the habit of reading.

What we love about Neev Magazine?

  1. It is a bilingual magazine with interesting content curated in Hindi & in English for children aged 5-15 years.
  2. It is child friendly & child safe content – it has no external links or promotional ads. So no-bakwas!
  3. Indian-themed content – All the content is based on Indian characters and the culture depicting the present day situations. How will your child relate to a character living in America or England?
  4. It encourages children to write & contribute poems, articles in Hindi & English.
  5. It publishes over 50 articles every month to promise a smartphone-free fun for kids. Indeed a smarter way to unwind.
  6. It is designed keeping in mind the special needs of children like those who are visually impaired or face other reading disorders like dyslexia.

With startups focusing on the upliftment of the society as the whole, there is no doubt that “Hindi” will survive. Let’s not ring the death bell for a language that’s widely spoken in India. Let’s take the first step today. I remember when my friend proudly announced that her daughter had won the elocution competition in Hindi. It’s a rare sight to see parents taking pride over their children’s dialect in their mother tongue or in Hindi. After all a child who reads, will be an adult who thinks. Isn’t it?

Foray into the world of a unique collection of fiction, comics, poems & stories which mesmerize your child. Let them not become couch potatoes. Sow the seeds of wisdom & happiness. They will become trees with a strong foundation. And at the risk of being repetitive, that’s what ‘Neev’ means – “Foundation”.
