How To Delay Early Puberty In Girls – Causes & Consequences

Early Onset Of Puberty - How to keep it a

Being a mother to two beautiful angels, “Puberty” is a term which sends jitters right through my veins. Being aware of the fact that I will have to encounter many queries and concerns regarding puberty, I am on the constant quest for answers too – How To Delay Early Puberty In Girls – Causes & Consequences.

She was scared stiff. There was blood oozing out of her and she thought she had done something wrong. She was scared to tell her mother about it. So, she suffered in silence and hoped it would go away. But it didn’t. It was there to stay. Period, it is.

This is the truth for many young girls today. They are simply not ready for puberty, yet. Puberty makes itself seen and felt at a very early age today. While girls in 1860 got her first period around 16, in 1920 she got it around 14 years of age. But today, she is likely to get it around 12 years of age or even earlier in many cases.

Mothers are often seen ruing the fact that their daughters have ‘got it too soon’. While puberty is a sign of fertility and can be a reason to rejoice that everything is normal on that front, the pains of puberty are real too.

What is “Puberty”?
Simply put, Puberty is a natural stage of growth in both boys and girls, when they become sexually mature. The signs of puberty are different in boys and girls. It is a process which usually happens in girls between the ages 8 and 13 and boys between the ages 10 and 16.

Any signs of puberty prior to this age is considered as early puberty or scientifically termed as “precocious puberty”. Girls are more prone to attain precocious puberty than boys do.

It’s a difficult period. Puberty is.

Classic signs of puberty are the periods (or menstruation or monthly cycle), enlarging of breasts and pubic hair. When little girls see these changes in their bodies, they are alarmed. They want to hide away from this apparently unpleasant stuff, but they can’t. No one can do anything about it; so, girls shy away from wearing certain clothes, slouch so that no one notices the breasts; bear the spasms of menstruation with a sadness they cannot show; and in addition to this, withdraw into a shell despite themselves. All because ‘it’ happened too early. The mothers are not unaffected and go about trying to make their girls feel better, so that the girl goes with the flow and remains normal.

Things are not the same however especially because early puberty is becoming quite the norm, making mothers and daughters wish they could make puberty wait.

How do I know that my daughter has entered ‘puberty’ stage?
The signs indicating the onset of Puberty are development of breasts, growth of pubic hair in the groin area or armpits area and body odor. Other emotional/psychological changes could be visible like changes in mood swings, affirmativeness in voice/thoughts or sudden spurt in height too. She might also develop slim waistline and wider hips.

What are the signs of puberty in boys?
The signs of puberty in boys are growth of testicles, growth of pubic hair and faster growth of arms, legs, hands and feet, when compared to other parts of the body.

Early Puberty in boys

What are the long-term effects of early puberty?
In most of the cases, there is nothing serious to worry about as there are no proven health effects on kids. She/he might be little ahead of the normal kids; and this might make him/her feel a little awkward socially, but that would settle down gradually. The child might be taller than others, but a sudden spurt in growth might leave her/him shorter than an average adult.

Can you stop early puberty? How to delay early puberty in girls?

Mothers and their girls are keen to know how to prolong puberty. And there is hope. Here are some ways of prolonging puberty. But first, let’s look at the causes of early puberty.

Primary Causes Of Early Puberty

  1. Fat in excess: Unhealthy eating habits are contributors to early puberty. Junk food, fatty food, food high in sugar all lead to the generation of substances like leptin and estrogen, which further cause early puberty and also lead to a further build-up of fatty tissue.
  2. Social and psychological stresses: In the current day and age, children are seen to be subjected to trauma and stresses caused by social and psychological factors such as poor family relationships, or trauma born out of natural incidents or due to cultural and social compulsions. These stresses act as silent attackers to hormonal balance and create red flag situations like early puberty.
  3. Increased exposure to unwanted chemicals: This leads to hormonal imbalances that stem the natural hormonal journey. Girls and boys are both exposed to fearful levels of unwanted chemicals (close to 800 such chemicals) in their daily lives, which can adversely impact the natural growth of hormones. This is found to be one of the important causes of early puberty.

How To Delay Early Puberty In Girls – Causes & Consequences
There are a host of factors which could trigger the early onset of puberty, they are:-
Five foods that are strictly to be consumed in continence are –
1. Caffeine and aspartame present in sweetened beverages and cold drinks.
2. Sugar sweetened beverages or also fruit juices for that matter
3. Fast foods and junk foods, items featuring in this list would seem endless
4. High salt intake
5. Highly spicy-flavored foods

How can you control early period?

Precocious Puberty

  • Stop girls from eating the wrong/unhealthy foods:

Junk food such as burgers, pizzas, chocolate, doughnuts are criminals and destroy the health and hormone balance. For preventing early puberty, it is therefore important to pay close attention to and monitor the food consumed by young girls. Read how:

  • Stay away from eating plastic:

We are never aware of how killer-plastic can be found, seen and inadvertently consumed. Did you know for example, that canned foods are often lined with harmful plastic chemicals and BPA? Did you know that cooking in Teflon or microwaving food in plastic containers and bowls or plates can be dangerous to health? Did you know that even storing water or beverages in plastic bottles particularly with PVC or polycarbonate is not good? The trouble with all of these is that they are silent and hidden killers of health. And most certainly disrupt hormonal balance. So, avoid them like the plague and go for glass or stainless-steel containers for food storage and heating. You don’t want your girl to suffer, do you?

  • Sugar? Say NO!:

I think enough has been said and written and voiced about how sugar is responsible for the exponential obesity index of the world population. Now, it is also proven that sugar can lead to earlier periods. This is how. When sugar is consumed on a high scale, insulin levels in the blood peak alarmingly. This can lead to a dangerously high concentration of the sex hormones, which in turn is related to early periods. The best thing to do is strictly control the sugar intake of your girl.

Say No To Sugar

  • Cook at home, cook the old-fashioned way

It’s best to cook the old-fashioned way and at home by using clean, organic ingredients and going in for freshly cooked food. This helps primarily to control the intake of processed, packaged food which is unhealthy in many ways especially for its high content of sugars and salts and preservatives. Also, avoid cooking in advance and storing cooked food in the refrigerator for days. Freshly cooked food is the healthiest food.

  • Eat fresh- eat fruits and vegetables a lot

Eating whole fruit and vegetables is on the wane in the current times; however, to ensure that girls get enough roughage from fibre in their diet, make sure you include enough portions of raw fruit and veggies washed clean. Fibre is known to prevent early menstruation in girls. But don’t wait for organic; simply go ahead and include whole fruits and vegetables in the diet; with the right kind of cleaning, you should be able to limit the exposure to pesticides.

  • Buy local. Go to the farmers’ market

There are enough farmers’ markets going around and you must plan a weekly visit to these markets if you want to source clean, local, fresh and sometimes, organic produce. One trip to the farmers’ market and you will come away with bulging bags full of fresh and healthy produce. You could also try your hand at having a small terrace or kitchen garden where you grow your own cherry tomatoes or brinjal (egg plant) and other veggies and fruit. It’s quite doable and pleasurable too.

  • Go for low-fat dairy products

If you cannot go without dairy products and love your milk and yoghurt, make sure you go for low-fat ones. Low-fat food intake prevents early periods, as we have mentioned earlier in this article.

  • Eat less meat and eat organic meat

Meat intake should be limited as it leads to better health. However, even for your limited intake, make sure the meat is clean, organic and antibiotic free. Animals who are injected with antibiotics to prevent illness or other harmful drugs to fatten them up, can be trouble makers to your health when consumed. Be careful from where you buy your meat.

  • Go plastic-free:

Stay away from the following plastic killers.

  • Canned foods:

Canned foods often come with a bad plastic chemical lining. Avoid those.

How To Avoid Early Puberty

  • Don’t microwave or store food in plastic

Use glass or stainless steel. Avoid cooking in Teflon.

  • Choose non-toxic personal and household products:

What’s this got to do with hormones? If you ask us, a lot! Yes! If you ask us – “How To Delay Early Puberty In Girls” -Personal products like perfumes, toothpastes, soaps, deodorants may have triclosan and triclocarbon, aluminium chlorohydrate which are hormone disruptors. Even tea-tree and lavender oil are culprits. Best is to avoid them, if you want your hormones to progress naturally and avoid early puberty. Also go for natural pesticides, natural material-based mattresses and other items in the house.

If you read the above carefully, you will know what to avoid and what to use. The focus should be on using natural, organic materials in all that you eat, use and do and adopting a naturally healthy lifestyle. All these together may increase your chances of avoiding early puberty in girls.

While we can say that there are ways of delaying puberty, there is no guarantee. It is therefore best to prepare your girls earlier than you think is right, for puberty. She needs your support at all times so that your little girl does not prematurely grow up and retains her chirpy, bubbly, carefree self.

How to keep the Early Onset of Puberty at bay?
Puberty is a natural phenomenon; and any abnormality could cause distress or discomfort to the child as well as the parents. Imagine dealing with a 8 year old having to deal with menstruation and enlarged breasts at such a tender age? It is definitely an uncomfortable situation to deal with. Here are a few suggested practices which could help you cruise through the path and help you achieve a normal puberty:-

  • Eat less meat, choose antibiotic-free and organic meat.
  • Keep indoor air healthy.
  • Choose mattresses and linen made of natural material like coir, cotton, wool and natural latex.
  • Build a healthy atmosphere at home; maintaining good familial relationships.
  • Being positive and spreading positivity to the kids will help them a great deal to tackle their problems and concerns in a more responsible manner. Thus, making them physically and psychologically strong.
  • Do not put excessive pressure on your kids to excel or perform ; as stress also causes excessive release of estrogen hormone, responsible for the onset of signs of puberty.
  • Fitness is the key to keep early puberty at bay. Daily exercise of about 30-60 minutes helps to maintain the hormone levels and acts as a stress-buster too.
  • Practicing yoga which emphasizes on service, asanas, meditation and pranayama. This has proven to delay the onset of puberty.
  • Educate the kids on puberty, menstruation and sexual development too. Make a cautious approach in choosing the words; as they might make an everlasting impact in the young minds.
  • Maintain healthy levels of hygiene; washing your hands before and after every meal

Three… Two… One… That Is It, Parents. Time Out!!!

Picture this, in a room full of chaos, there is no noise but the television is on. There is no communication but people sitting here have a cell phone in their hands clicking away to glory. Parents are sitting across their kids but haven’t seen each other’s faces because the father is busy on WhatsApp while the mother is catching up on the soap operas she has missed – what will she discuss about in front of her friends if she has missed this particular episode. The kids are busy on theirs; one is playing games online with his friends while the girl is busy shooting selfies to upload on social networking sites. Three… Two… One… That Is It, Parents. Time Out!!!

tech-modern-family

And yet we claim that we know our kids better than anybody. Nobody needs to teach us about parenting. If all else fails then we shall definitely look up on the internet for the tips on parenting. But for now – this will do.

It’s time to WAKE UP! Though we have all the high end gadgets to keep us in touch with the world we have lost it when it comes to our kids. We have our jobs to keep up, house chores to complete and other errands to do but we can’t always take out quality time for our children.

How about a time out on the justification?

What nonsense! My child is number one in his class.

Is that all that you are asking from your child? Just to come on the top or to compete with his fellow beings. Or he could be ahead in sports or any other activity as well. And the thing is we have found an easy way out – once the child gets involved with his tuitions, his activities and his friends; he is already doing enough to become a go getter. And what matters is not that they came first but they enjoyed. They enjoyed participating, they enjoyed giving an exam or it could be that race in school sports. Winning is important but more than that did your child enjoy?

What you should be doing!

Get involved

As parents we always want to give our children the best when it comes to everything. Give, but get involved. By getting involved don’t ask questions like a military commander. Once your child comes back from his tution classes ask him what he did. Did he make friends there? How does he find his teacher? Etc.. If you are sending him to some academy ask whether he/she likes the sport that they have taken up or are they coerced into it.

You will not score points by sending your children to do extracurricular activities but know what your child actually wants or is interested in. Talk it out with them and not their teachers. They are your top priority.

Bad Touch Good Touch

You do not want to scare your child by telling them that the world is full of bad people but it always helps in telling or explaining to them about trust. Unfortunately social media these days is filled up with missing children, harassment cases and what not. Educational institutions these days have set up programs where they do explain what good touch or bad touch is. Still it would be better if we could impart the knowledge upon them. Because this makes them feel secure that it’s okay to share with their mother or father and not to shy away from it.

Make Sundays Fundays

Time Out

Say a big no to movies when it comes to spending time with your kids. By taking out them for movies you aren’t really doing a great job rather you will cut off the conversation that you could have had. Instead go the traditional way of playing indoor games, solving crosswords, going for picnics or it could be reading a very nice book and you could help them find difficult words in a dictionary. That way you can help in building your child’s vocabulary.

Setting Rules

At times parenting can be stressful but you can help yourself out by discussing it with your child. Sit them down and explain how important discipline is in their life. Do not lecture them on it. But find a fun and easy way for them to understand and tell them about it. In case they do not follow the timetable or the rules set by you do not bribe them in doing so. No one ever said parenting is very easy. Be patient with them.

Learning to be Responsible

If your child’s clothes are lying in a crumpled manner on the floor, don’t shout at them. It’s your fault of not telling them that as soon as they come from school they need to keep things at their respective places – they may not listen to you at once which most of the parents complain about but they need to be told in an easy going manner as much as you can tell them. Or you could also show them how to do it.

More communication More positivity

It has been observed that the more you get involved with your child the happier and positive he/she becomes. Because no matter the age of your child they will always have the need to feel secure and the assurance that no matter what they have someone who will always hold their hand. Hug and kiss your child once a day. With older children – they may feel embarrassed in front of others while you hug them but always empathize with them or few words of support will work.

They Mirror You

Time Out!!!

As a parent it is always important how you behave with your spouse, your parents or your friends. Your children are always observing you, your manners and how you behave in front of others. If you tell them to close the bathroom door after the use, make sure you close the door too after use. Because kids these days are quick to notice and also point out that you did not do that particular thing. And you are advising them on how to do it.

Listen to their side of story no matter how funny or weird it seems. And importantly look in their eyes while they communicate. Leave your gadgets aside when with them because we do not want to create robots in the near future. In the time with them, you want to be with them completely. We want to create an emotional being who learns to love and give.

‘Mattar Nahi Khaunga Main!’ – What every mom has heard umpteen times

What every mom has heard umpteen times - 'Mattar Nahi Khaunga Main!'

‘Mattar Nahi Khaunga Main!’ is what I hear so often.

Like really? Did you just say that? Ok quick, grab a pen and paper to tick mark very sincerely the points you have done thus far with your child or children.

Have you –

  1. Been after the poor soul to ‘EAT UP’ the peas from the cottage cheese curry you made every time they said ‘Mattar Nahi Khaunga Main!’?
  2. Menacingly asked your child to finish the milk before he/she runs off to play with friends?
  3. Told them every single day that he/she needs to study atleast an hour apart from the ‘Home Work’ time to do well in studies in particular and life in general?
  4. Without batting an eyelid, suggested your child to finish the summer holiday homework in the first week and not let it lag on till the last day or minute.
  5. Threateningly snatched the TV remote telling him stories of yore when there was no cable network and how we managed well without it?
  6. Been stone hearted enough and tried to put a restriction on the child’s exposure to the mobile phone, I-pad, X box, PS4, etc.?
  7. Made a time table for him or her to utilize the day better? Including defining a fixed sleeping and waking up time?
  8. Admonished or passed a comment on how the kid could have got even better marks but for the ‘silly mistakes’?

Ha ha…so you did tick quite a few of them. Welcome to the club of “Confused Parents“. The only solacing factor is that you are not alone in this.

Mattar Nahi Khaunga Main

Ok, then once again pick up that pen and paper and write the truth for each point mentioned below.

  1. Point 1: Did you love peas/onions /kadhi patta as a kid and more so loved it when your mom almost shoved them down your gullet? How did it feel? Did she manage you to have a lifelong loving relationship with the green legume?
  2. Point 2: I am sure many of us love milk. But then many of us cannot even stand the smell of boiling milk in the house. Yet, you were made to have it as if that is the only thing in the world that would give us strength. Hope you know, even doctors nowadays suggest milk can be given a miss considering the adulterated milk available in tetra packs or at Dairies because it causes more harm than good.
  3. Point 3: Oh please! My dearest fellow parents, did you really read that much extra in school? Do you remember sitting a second more beyond finishing your school homework last thing in the night?
  4. Point 4: I shall touch the holy book and confess, I did my summer holiday homework on the last evening of the 2 month long vacation. Teary eyed and tensed. What about you? Do tell the truth!!!
  5. Point 5 and 6: True there were less or no gadgets, digital devices or a 24 hour TV broadcast and 500 channels to distract us. But did we not simply step out and play till late after sunset?
  6. Point 7: Made a time table alright for the kids but look back and see if even you adhered to it. I mean apart from just reproving them for not following it, what have you done? Only increased your blood pressure and spoilt your mood.
  7. Point 8: Last but surely not the least. A line being handed over from one generation to the other. You could have done better but for your ‘silly mistakes’. So did you like score cent percent in each subject? Every time? From class 1 upto graduation? If you did, then a standing ovation to you. If you did not, then…why, why are you torturing the poor child!!

Why do we do things we did not want our parents to do to us?

Much as many of you would argue with me, that times have changed, competition is tough, only the toppers can survive college admissions, I would still like to argue back and say, we are lucky to be in times when things are also changing. When it is fine if he eventually decides not to pursue biotechnology and ends up as a chef and food vlogger and gets name, fame and money! Just in case you missed it, I did mention he and not a she.

I personally believe, kids whatever be the age are intelligent beings. They gauge our lies almost instantly. “I bet mom used to puke when she was made to have a banana shake. She is simply taking a revenge’.

I have helped my child make a time table ‘n’ number of times. Truth be told, we did not manage to stick to it. One day it’s a dinner at home. Another day it could be a movie at the hall. And most of the day, it’s a Tom and Jerry game between us. And I know that you know what that means!

Of course, I too am a confused parent. Just like you. And it is a learning experience each day. Most of the days I am completely hassled-tired- irritated that time management is going haywire. Nutritious food isn’t going into my kids system. Sleep might be insufficient.

And then there are days when I step back. Step back to see the entire scenario from a distance.

Just observe. Despite late nights, less number of winks, incomplete homework, missed cent percent marks, your child is doing absolutely fine. He is far less tensed and stressed than we are. The idea is to learn from them and relax a bit. Breathe a little.  Ease the strain.

Look back at your fun filled absolutely carefree childhood, the ballistic teenage years and the lets not even talk about the crazy-sensational college days.

We turned out just swell. And that is exactly how our kids would turn out too.

Let’s begin by:

  1. Not lying to them or to ourselves.
  2. Not keeping unachievable expectations of them. They kids for heaven’s sake. Let them laugh and play to their hearts content. I meant in the park, not on the I-Pad!!!
  3. Not stressing our lives out because the child missed a day at school.

Remember they are intelligent beings. They know when we are lying and when fafing!!!All we need to do from time to time is to step back. We all need to. We all should. For the sake of our children’s tension free childhood. And for the sake of our well being too! And as far as your dear peas are concerned. Well, do what many of us do. Camouflage it!!! Camouflage it either in a Pea Pesto Pasta with Sundried Tomatoes or in a Green Peas Mashed Potato Pancake and put an end to their ‘Mattar Nahi Khaunga Main!’

3D Colouring – A dream come true for your child

Have we ever wondered why is drawing & coloring slowly losing it’s sheen with the kids? This generation has a lot more entertainment and gaming options than we could ever imagine of in our days. Thanks to the arrival of Ipad and Iphones, coloring has taken a backseat. In our frantic efforts to keep this lovely activity alive, we order a dozen of coloring books of different cartoon characters. We have always wished to transform their skills & imagination to the next level. Some people have sensed this urgency and designed unique activities that elevates coloring to the next level with a unique 3D experience. Drum Rolls please – Introducing you to Cretto – 3D Colouring Book– A dream come true for your child. 3D coloring books which merges coloring with the latest technology to make it more exciting!

How has Cretto succeeded in making this happen? Augmented Reality is the latest buzz in the field of edutainment. Augmented Reality, or AR, as it is popularly known, is a technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user’s view of the real world, thus providing an augmented look of the real world. We all know about the “Pokemon Go” mania right? Now the question is, how does AR help in making coloring more exciting?

AR makes space for the developers to facilitate audio visual effects in live camera feed to make the experience more exciting. Cretto comes with a Companion App that brings coloring to life. Which means the characters can talk, walk, make sounds or dance to your tunes too! The biggest advantage is the interactive element involved in these 3D Coloring books.  They have proved to be effective learning tools making learning so much fun. The kids are bound to be lured by these books, as each picture has its own 3D effects. As the 3D image will take form of the colours used in colouring book, your child can think of all the possible color combinations for his picture, resulting in an element of uniqueness in every picture.

3D colouring book

So, how does Augmented Reality come to play?

For example, a kid could be coloring a Santa Claus picture, then we scan the picture using the App. Then the magic unfolds, we can hear the Santa Claus sing, dance or even giving gifts to kids, shaking hands and everything cute you’d love children to enjoy watching! Another example could be students scanning the cover of a book and getting the overview of the books in the form of videos, documents and pictures. The pictures become alive and pose like they are surreal. That’s so much of fun… what more could a kid ask for?

Cretto Review

Besides being a recreational activity for the kids, coloring as an activity, also is known for its multi-fold benefits. Some of them being basic motor skills, improved hand-eye coordination, ability to focus, unleashing the hidden creative talent, as there are no boundaries to a kids’ imagination.

Cretto’s 3D Coloring Books facilitates an improvised learning approach where kids can also interact with their subject matter rather than just listening to it. This encourages the kid to stay glued to his coloring book, as every picture has a unique surprise hidden in it! The parents are giving it a big thumbs up, as it is very engaging when in comparison with the traditional coloring books, which are relatively “outdated”, after these AR Books have entered the edutainment arena.

The superior audio-visual experience that is rendered to the kids through these books is simply amazing. All that you require is an Android or an IOS phone.  The element of fun combined with learning makes it an excellent choice for gifting purposes too. These 3D Coloring books are a new entrant, hence slowly but steadily gaining popularity.  They can be introduced to kids aged 4 years & above. They have two editions – Jungle Toons 1 & Jungle Toons 2. Each book contains 10 unique characters and 22 Magical experiences.  All this for an unbelievable affordable price of Rs.249 only. They also have a combo pack to choose from.

3D Colouring – A dream come true for your child

What we loved the most:

  1. This product enables better utilisation of kids’ screen time and also reduces the amount of time spent on the screen at the same time.
  2. The characters will appear in 3D in the same colour kids have used in colouring the character.

In this gadgets- enslaved world, it is indeed challenging for us as parents to hold on to our kids fantasies. We can’t say no to everything; but these Cretto 3D Coloring books are sure to appall your kids by adding an element of fun and excitement to their coloring. Rest assured, they are great entertainment and learning tools too! The Urgent Need For Understanding Child Psychology

The Urgent Need For Understanding Child Psychology

“I wish parenting came with a manual or one style that would solve all parenting issues”; this is probably the most commonly heard statement of new parents who always want the best for their children. Parenting is not a destination that we have to reach, it is a journey that we are bestowed in our life as parents. Why is there The Urgent Need For Understanding Child Psychology?

Sometimes we fall, sometimes we learn, sometimes we are exhausted, sometimes we are grateful, sometimes we are perfect! Throughout this journey one thing that should stay constant as parents is the desire to make ourselves better and progress with our children as they grow. This would mean facing our inner demons, challenging our weaknesses and rising above our strengths to raise confident and kind children for the future. But how often do we seriously reflect on our parenting practices and their impact on our child’s growth?

In one of his recent articles about parenting, spiritual master Sadhguru makes a statement, “Parenting is a 20-year project if your children turn out good, if not it is a lifelong project.” He also suggests that we should only take up this project if we are truly ready for this long commitment, and it requires a huge transformation as individuals within ourselves. How thought provoking are these words!

A child who comes in our life is absolutely naive and totally dependent on us for his survival and future success in every aspect of life. Isn’t this a really big responsibility then?

Understanding the way in which a child develops and makes meaning of this life is crucial to make this journey a memorable one for both the parents and children. And one parenting style would not be suitable for everyone as each child is born unique and special. How best to nurture this uniqueness is the biggest challenge of parents in today’s fast-paced technological times.

There is a plethora of research done by neuroscientists and psychologists which reveal that the effects of the attachment bonds shared by the children with their primary caretakers during their formative years of childhood play a remarkable role in their future relationships and achievements in life.

Children do not learn by listening, as much as they do from imitation. The bonds we form with them, how we connect with them, how we behave and respond to various emotions are all being registered by our kids as they watch us.  When a child experiences belittling and dismissal during his childhood, he will often tend to be insecure and judgemental; whereas the one growing with unconditional love and acceptance will exhibit positive self-esteem leading to fulfilling relationships in future.

Child Psychology

In his book ‘Unconditional Parenting’ author Alfie Kohn argues that the single most need of a child is to be loved unconditionally so that he knows he is accepted and loved irrespective of his actions and behaviour. When deeply reflected, it indicates that creating an environment free of prejudice, filled with respect and love needs a major paradigm-shift in the parenting techniques that we might have been brought up in the past. And this is often the most neglected aspect or difficult part to accept for adults as parents. This is not to say that we are parenting our children in an inappropriate manner. But, understanding the dynamics of child development and impacts of parenting styles on them makes it more effective and a satisfying experience rather than ending up with frustrations and power struggles.

The society we live in also has a considerable effect on our parenting practices. It sometimes creates a barrier and restricts us to behave in a certain manner with our children which is unknowingly hampering the very well-being of our children. For example, parents often choose to react rather than respond with patience to the meltdowns and tantrums of the children (especially in public). It is important at this stage to decipher the need and the reason behind the behaviour of the children and not focus on meeting our need of being able to appear competent in the eyes of the strangers around us. In his article “What makes a terrific parent”, Alfie Kohn brilliantly mentions the three closely related features of high-quality parents.

These include:

1) Acknowledging and respecting the uniqueness in the needs of your children and understanding it to be distinct from your own

2) Learning everything about nurturing this uniqueness and the needs according to their development

3) Acting on and staying committed to meeting those needs whenever possible.

It requires a high-level of self-reflection, thoughtful consideration to understanding the growth of our children and staying in task with them throughout the journey. It needs practice, takes time but is certainly an enriching and nourishing experience at both ends. This also facilitates the children to be a contributing part of the journey and not just do what we want them to do as their responses and gestures offer an assurance to us as parents to stay committed and bring authenticity and depth to this beautiful bonding with us.

It is imperative to find some time in our busy schedules to know more about the influence of our parenting techniques and hence learn more about how it feels to not just be in the children’s shoes but also have their feet. Their childhood days may seem longer but the years will pass by soon, which cannot be relived in our lives. A comprehensive knowledge of their developmental years and a little more conscious parenting will be a great deal of investment for their future accomplishments.

Jill Of All Trades, Master Of Some | Meet Team, The Conscious Collective

How often do you see an All-India Rank Holder Chartered Accountant & a Fashion Retail Expert ‘cum’ Pastry Chef joining hands to start an e-commerce venture, proudly merchandising mainly “MADE IN INDIA” products? Bet, this is a first. ConfusedParent brings to you the partners in crime – Brains behind The Conscious Collective. Meet Anushree Jain & Prerna Gupta the the sister-duo who started ConsciousCo.in to celebrate “Motherhood”.

Anushree, a doting new mommy, is like the logical left side of the company’s brain, a Chartered Accountant by education (All-India Rank holder, no less) and received her B.Com (Hons) from Delhi University (again, gold medalist).

Prerna pursued Fashion Management from the London College of Fashion before going to Le Cordon Bleu, London to become a certified Pastry Chef. She is an author & a Vipassana meditator. She loves travelling & has worked in merchandising, advertising & branding previously making her a design aficionado and giving her an eye for detail.

The Conscious Collective

Did we just say – Jill Of All Trades, Master Of Some? 🙂

Diversified backgrounds & rich experience spanning from varied genres of professional specialization, the siblings conceptualized & morphed their vision into reality & The Conscious Collective was born when Anushree was expecting her first baby. She was scouting for eco- friendly, luxury, trimester-appropriate organic products for her pregnancy only to realize that this is an unorganized market. They identified a need for high-quality & customised premium products to pamper a mommy-to-be. With the desire to fill this huge gap, The Conscious Collective was born & found it’s niche.

In conversation with Anushree & Prerna – See what they got to say about their entrepreneurial journey.

1)  Did you always knew you wanted to be an entrepreneur? Or did you make a conscious choice much later?

Since early years, we both had a very strong inclination to start our own enterprise. As teenagers we used to always discuss ideas and be intrigued by problem-solving businesses that were causing disruptions. It was only last year that we got the opportunity to act on this dream.

2)  What is the ideology you live by?

The main philosophy behind The Conscious Collective – which also reflects the ideology of its team is SUSTAINABILITY. In everything we do, our endeavor is to look beyond the profits and weigh the social impact of every decision. This belief is reflected in form of various things we do at ConsciousCo – whether it is our Be-Kind initiative, our Made-in-India product selection or the dedication to use reusable packaging.

3)  How do you intent to expand? How do you go about picking the right products or
vendors that represent the brand?

Our expansion plans are always governed by demand. Since our launch, we have added more verticals based on consumer feedback. We now have organic superfoods, chemical-free beauty products, a monogram store which have received rave reviews. As and when our customers ask for more, we will honour them by adding new lines.

The ConsciousCo

MERCHANDISING

We have strict guidelines that our merchandising team adheres to for product/vendor selection. We curate top of the line products from artisanal niche brands only.

4)  Tell us something about the obstacles you face while starting up (as a woman) & how
you both overcame it to make The Conscious collective where it is today?

Every entrepreneur, whether a man or a woman faces obstacles in their journey. Whats important is that one perseveres and tries to find solutions rather than getting bogged down. In that respect, we both have the spirit of a boxer. Every time we face difficulties, we come back stronger. Infact, based on past experiences we can safely say that every obstacle has taught us something and led us to improve our offering.

The Conscious Collective Review

5)  Are you looking for funding in the near future? What is the way forward?

Receiving funds are always a validation of your idea, however, in keeping with our ideology, we aspire to create a business that grows organically and is not dependant on external fund infusion. Organic growth is sustainable growth.

6)  With so many inspiring people around, who is your inspiration?

We draw inspiration from every indiviual that has the pizazz to fight & overcome their own unique set of circumstantial challenges. On a particular day it could be a gardener who at 70 works just for his passion… On another day it could be elon musk who is aiming to take humanity to mars… Or it could even be Swami Parathasarathy who at 90 plays cricket and still has hope for humanity.

7)  Tell us something more about the “Sister-Chemistry”?

Its great fun working with someone you’ve grown up with. We never struggle understanding each other’s quirks and find a way to align with one another’s thought processes always. One flip side is that the business discussions never stop, even on dining tables or family vacations.

8)  Many of the products sold on “The Conscious Collective” are premium inclined towards the affluent segment. How do you intend to make it more mass-market?

In our view our products are very much affordable. India has an increasingly affluent middle-class that lays emphasis on spending on conscious products. We are confident that the market is poised for tremendous growth in the years to come.

The USP of ConsciousCo.in are their curated boxes be it the ones for an expecting mom or for a new baby or their healthy Superfood boxes. The boxes start Rs 1500 and bring together a perfect blend of products for each of the underlying themes. These are not only great for personal consumption but are excellent for gifting as well.

Our Pick – What did we buy?

1. Krysalis Silver Rattle & Bracelet

Jill Of All Trades, Master Of Some – Meet Anushree & Prerna from The Conscious Collective Review

The silver bracelet & rattle is priced at Rs.3,150. You can also personalize it by engraving the little baby’s name. The products come packaged in beautiful boxes with a pink/blue theme.

What we love the most

  2. Eye For Detail- 10/10: Every product sold on the website is drilled for quality, performance, functionality and design aesthetics. They have an incredible ability to go broad & deep, which is the hallmark of a great Founder.
