Curiosity- Thy name is “Child”

Kids have an uncanny ability to put us in a fix with their curious questions. When my little daughter was growing up, she used to shoot questions at us out of the blue. Like the other day, she came up to me and asked me how long does it take for a baby to be born? I was at first taken aback, not knowing what to say, but mustered some sanity and replied 9 months not knowing where it was leading to.

I got curious when she started writing on a book something. On a closer examination I could see her multiplying 101 with 9. So she got 909 and next she was dividing it by 12. So she got an answer of 75 and remainder 9. I asked her what she was doing. She said, Mama, Kauravas were 101 and if they were born 9 months after the other, then Duryodhan was 75 years elder than the youngest brother. And when the war happened what would have been his age? It was too much for me to handle, so I dodged the question saying I had a lot of work, and told her to ask her dad when he comes.

Parents Cant Answer
theconversation

Phew…… What an escape. How am I supposed to know all this. But on a second thought, there seemed some logic in her question. How they come with such questions, only they know. So that evening luckily for Suresh, my hubby, we had a Birthday Party to attend and he escaped the question as Diya, my little one was super excited about attending her best friend’s Birthday Party.

A few days passed and on a chilled out Sunday morning, she came to me and put another googly. She asked me “Mama, how many months are there for my Birthday?” I replied”Your Birthday just came 3 months back. Don’t you remember? Your next Birthday will come 9 months from now. Why? do you want a Birthday Gift or something?” I could see a sparkle in her eyes when she said, “Mama, you told me it takes 9 months for a baby to be born. I want a baby as a Birthday Gift”. That was really a googly that had me clean bowled. Just as I was thinking of how to dodge her question, Suresh entered the room with the parcel of Breakfast. Glad was I to see him and again conveniently moved out saying “Come, have your Breakfast. Have it hot hot…”

Motherhood has been a learning experience for me and am sure for all the mothers. What I learnt from these incidents is that the children are always exploring new things and are a storehouse of questions. I guess all of us have grown up being as inquisitive as our kids, but somewhere in the process of growing up, we have lost the mojo to learn and explore new possibilities.

If we don’t want a repeat of our mistakes by our children, we should keep their interest in learning alive. Even if they come up to us with awkward questions. Having said that, I did answer to her above queries in a more subtle manner on a later date and I guess she was convinced with what I put on the plate. Nowadays, she has started reading some books about aliens and stuff like that. God save me from the next question is all I can pray.

14 Junk Foods You Should Avoid & Why

Holy Cow! I Forgot My Wife’s Birthday!

Sipping my morning coffee, I was glancing through the newspaper when my little daughter came up and hugged me and gave me my daily dose of her sweet kiss wishing me “Good Morning”. This is a routine that makes my day and keeps me ticking the whole day.

I have a liking to astrology and daily horoscope and make it a point to read it daily. Always fascinated me how well these guys write to make everyone born in a particular star sign believe that their day is going to be as predicted. Now, all the Scorpios are going to make a quick buck and all the Virgos are going to have digestive problems. Love the way the words are twisted and turned to generalise it.

What Happened When I Forgot My Wife's Birthday
etsy.com

My daughter loves to know how her day is going to be and as soon as I get my dose of hug and kiss I read out her daily horoscope. After reading out, she always asks me one simple question. “Means?” And I reply ” It’s going to be awesome” Off she goes to get ready for the school and I finish my coffee and get going to my room to get ready for office.

My wife Reshmi in the meanwhile was in the kitchen getting things ready for me and my daughter. She is a wonderful home maker and a teacher by hobby. She visits the orphanage school to take Spoken English and drawing classes every Weekend.

So, after our yummy breakfast, me and my little one set out for our respective destinations, she to school and me to office. As I settled down to work, I got a call from my Mom In Law wishing me on my Wife’s Birthday. Gosh! How could I forget her birthday? How could I be so forgetful? What would Reshmi think? I felt so horrible that I could hardly speak to my Mom in Law.

I Forgot Your Birthday
BestBirthdayCake

I hurriedly finished the conversation and started to think what I should do with the current state of affairs. Finally I decided not to call her and wish her. Instead I thought of ways to cheer her up. So I texted her saying that we all will go for a movie and dine out tonight.

My wait for a reply was getting me a bit worried. So after an hour or so, I got a message saying she had already made dinner and since it was a Saturday, she had to go to School for her classes.

What do I do now? She is one who puts in all the effort to make us feel so special on our Birthdays and special occasions. Just a couple of months back she organized a Surprise Birthday for me, and here I am, who conveniently forgot her Birthday. By now I was feeling so ashamed just by this thought. So I decided to go get her a good gift and give her a surprise visit. Since Saturdays are more or less chillax for a broking firm like ours, I left my office after delegating the work to my subordinate. I got a pendant and got a bouquet of red roses, her favorite.

I reached home and was wondering how I would face her, but it turned out to be an anti climax as she was not at home. She presumably had gone to shop for groceries from the nearby super market.

After a wait if about 5 minutes, I heard her voice from behind. She was amused and asked me, “Neeraj, What happened? Is Everything alright? Are you fine?

So, here was my moment…. I said “Happy Birthday Baby…so sorry for not wishing you in the morning” She was like Oh, thats ok. It happens. Even I forgot it was my Birthday. That made me feel even more horrible. So I went ahead and gave her a nice hug and gave her the gifts which I had bought for her. “What is this? Are you crazy? You left your work and bought all this? So nice of you, but why?

So that afternoon we had lunch together at home and we both went to pick up our daughter from school. Post that, she went to take classes and at night we stepped out for a dessert drive before we called it a day.

Even today, after so many years since this incident, when I look back, I feel blessed to have a life companion like her. In spite of my forgetting her Birthday, she was not a bit upset at all. They say a lady can either finish a man or complete him. Blessed to have one who does the latter.

Stress – The Buzz Word

Well, it was just another day and started off with the alarm from my phone. Had set my all time favourite song as my alarm. After a few days, it started irritating me and invariably would snooze it a couple of times before waking up. Needless to say it no longer is my favourite song. Sorry MLTR… your sleeping child isn’t letting me sleep like a child anymore. I looked at the clock and realized that I have exactly 20 minutes to wake up my daughter Ankita and get her lunch packed, make some quick breakfast for her so that she can catch the school bus which leaves sharp at 6 from the stop.

Cake walk you would say. But the scene is a bit different. Ankita needs a panic alarm to get up. I need to rush in to her room and start shouting at her “Look at the time, so you don’t want to go to school? Don’t expect me to drop you to school if you miss the bus. I need to go to work as well.” Feel so guilty about it, she has been awake till 12 in the night past few days trying to complete her science project. How taxing is the life of an 8th Std Student!

School, then stay back for Cultural Festival practice, then tuition, then project work. It’s so mechanical. Gone are those days when we were studying in school. We used to have time for everything, right from studying to playing with friends and after everything, we had plenty of time to fight with our siblings. Those were the days! Cut back to today, they hardly get time to even recharge their batteries. I guess that is one of the reasons why we are finding more cases of health disorders in children.

So Ankita gets up and by the time she is done with her daily chores it was 5.58. Now in the mad rush to catch her bus, she didn’t drink her milk before leaving. Somehow she caught the bus much to my relief. When I came back from the bus stop I realized that she hadn’t had her milk. I felt so bad that she has gone to school on an empty stomach. That really put me off as I got ready for my work. While having my breakfast I just had Ankita on my mind wondering if she had eaten anything from her box. But knowing her shy nature was sure she wouldn’t have opened her breakfast box.

Dont Grow Up too Fast My Angel

So here I was at my office at sharp 8. I was relieved that at least today I will not get reprimanded by my boss. The moment I switched on my computer I got a call from Ankita’s School. She had fainted and fallen in the assembly and was taken to the hospital for examination. I was shocked to say the least. I just picked my bag and left immediately. I was blaming myself for it, how could I be so careless?

On reaching the hospital I was directed to the Emergency Department. As I entered the room I saw my darling angel-Ankita on a bed, with her friend Sangeetha standing next to her feeding her something in a cup. Ankita was so glad to see me, as soon as she saw me I could see her eyes glow and a smile on her face. I went next to her and carressed her head and asked, “So Madam, what is this stunt all about?” She apologetically said, ” Sorry Ma, you had to leave your office and come. I fainted in the assembly, it was so hot and I was feeling giddy”. When I enquired if she had eaten or drank anything, she said she was having orange juice just now. Hadn’t eaten anything from morning.

I was feeling even more horrible. Just then the Doctor entered and I went forward to speak to him. He said that Ankita fell because of Hypoglycemia and needed to be kept under observation for a couple of hours. He had taken the blood test and was awaiting the results from the lab. Just then the nurse came with the report and handed over the same to him. Glancing it he turned to me and asked if there is any family history of Diabetes or Blood Pressure in our family. Her Grandfather was a diabetic patient. Apart from that no one in the family had it.

Apparently, her sugar had got low and BP had shot up. I couldn’t believe my ears! How can a kid have these problems? Stress, Stress and more Stress! We don’t realize that today’s generation is walking the tight rope where it takes a toll to keep the balance. On one hand, we want them to score A+ in all the subjects and on the other hand we want them to be a part of all competitions. In the process, we are getting them into the rat race much earlier than they are  capable of handling it.

It’s been a few months since this happened. Ankita is doing fine healthwise and we have been having a routine check up every 45 days to make sure everything is under control. But, a few questions still lingers in my mind that “Are we making our children grow older faster than they should? Is the education system doing the right thing by bulldozing them with the projects and massive portions?

Lower Back Pain During Pregnancy – Causes & Treatment

Back pain or discomfort during Pregnancy is a common phenomenon wherein the extent of discomfort varies from mild to extreme. The second half of pregnancy could be more taxing as back pain usually increases during that period. This is due to the simple fact that the baby growth is more rapid, thus applying more pressure on your spine which holds the weight of the growing baby and the uterus. Read more about Lower Back Pain During Pregnancy – Causes & Treatment.

During pregnancy, the body releases a hormone called ‘relaxin’ which helps the body to prepare for child birth. One of the effects of this hormone is that the ligaments throughout the body get loosened thereby reducing the stability of the pregnant woman and making her susceptible to weakness. A host of mechanical and hormonal factors lead to various discomforts during Pregnancy period, the most prominent being the lower back pain. Studies indicate that nearly 5 – 7 out of 10 pregnant women suffer from this body condition.

Lower Back Pain During Pregnancy – Causes & Treatment

What causes back pain during Pregnancy?

Lower Back Pain During Pregnancy
InLife HealthCare

The origin of the back pain is at the sacroiliac joint where the pelvis meets the spine. The common reasons are overweight/obesity, previous history of back pain.

Here is a list of the most common causes of back pain in pregnant women:

Excessive weight gain during pregnancy

The weight of the growing baby and the uterus puts pressure on the blood vessels and nerves in the pelvis and back resulting in back pain during pregnancy. A normal weight gain during pregnancy is anywhere between 11 – 15 kga. Beyond that it becomes difficult for the spine to hold on to the additional weight. This is the foremost reason for back pain in pregnant women. The pressure also pinches your sciatic nerve and causes the pain to run down the back of your legs.

Shift in the center of gravity

Pregnancy shifts your center of gravity – to a small extent, but it hardly gets noticed as your body adjusts to maintain it’s posture. This causes back pain or strain in many cases.

Change in posture or position during pregnancy

Wrong posture, standing on one leg, excessive standing, bending frequently over the waist are all the contributing factors. This results in you adjusting your posture and the way you move causing a strain on your back. According to NHS you should avoid lifting heavy objects right from your 1st trimester.

Stress during pregnancy

Emotional, physical or psychological stress levels also determine the well being of the expecting mother. An increase in the stress levels leads to severely tightening of muscles leading to chronic back pain. Emotional stress can cause your muscles to be tense in the back. This tension is then felt as pain or back spasms. This pain increases whenever you face stressful periods in your pregnancy.

Muscle separation

As the uterus expands, two sheets of muscles- the rectus abdominus run parallel from the rib cage to the pubic bone; they might get separated along the center seam causing severe back ache.

Previous health records

Any previous history of back pain, injury to the pelvis, hormonal imbalance, strenuous/monotonous work schedule, hypertension could all be the contributing factors for back pain or strain.

Hormonal changes during pregnancy

During pregnancy, the body releases a hormone called ‘relaxin’ which causes the loosening of the ligaments in your pelvis and makes the joints looser in preparation for the delivery process. So the ligaments around the back and spine also get loosened, thereby making it more susceptible to injury, instability & pain.

Fluid Retention & Oedema

Raised hormone levels cause your body to retain water during pregnancy. This causes your feet to get swollen and you feeling bloated. Your growing uterus puts pressure on the veins carrying blood back from your lower body partially blocked blood flow and retaining the fluid in your legs and feet.

How to treat back pain during pregnancy?

There is no established connection between ‘pregnancy’ and ‘back pain’. However, the good news is that this pain will disappear gradually after the child’s birth, or in many cases even before that. There are 12 simple and practical tips we would like to share with you which help you to ease or minimize your back pain & swelling. Dealing with the pains during pregnancy can be very stressful. With the added weight and the pressure of the growing baby, the pains just cause a lot of added stress and strain.

Regular exercise during pregnancy

Following a regular exercise routine will help you both in the short run and long run to strengthen your body, especially the core muscles and back muscles. It boosts your muscle flexibility and helps you to strengthen your spine. The recommended activities could be swimming, walking, stationary cycling, squatting, yoga. Depending upon your health condition, your gynecologist would suggest you a preferred exercise regime; including stretching, tummy and stabilization exercises will be very helpful to keep you healthy and fit! Monitor your weight – While it is normal to gain about 10-15 kgs during pregnancy, excessive weight gain aggravates swellings and can lead to other complications.

Elevate your feet

Keep your feet raised upto 6-12 inches above the level of your heart for 15-20 minutes atleast 3-4 times a day. This helps in easy flow of blood back to your lungs and heart.

Dress up right

This might not seem that important a factor, but it actually is! Right from your inner wear to the shoes you choose to wear – everything should be well thought of before you make the choice. Choosing to wear loose fitting clothes, flat heels, wearing maternity garments which have supportive bands to support your belly, the right size of maternity bra are some of the pre requisites you need to look into when you plan your shopping list. The whole underlying idea is that you need to be comfortable while you move around so that oxygen supply to the muscles is the maximum.

Ideal sleep position during pregnancy

Best Sleep Position During Pregnancy
YouTube

It is strictly restricted to sleep on the back. The ideal position would be to sleep on the side with a pregnancy pillow in between the legs so that the pressure on the back muscles is minimum. During pregnancy, try sleeping on your sides and not your back as this helps relieve the pressure on the vena cava. The vena cava is the largest draining vein leading to your heart.

Stop lifting weights during pregnancy

It is very important that you do not lift weights. In case you have a toddler to take care of, then bend at your knees or squat to lift him up. Or you could sit on the ground and allow him to climb your lap. in no situation you should bend at your waist, as it adversely affects your back strain.

Heat and Cold therapy/fermentation

Applying heat packs or cold packs on your back will help in providing temporary relief from your back pain. If your gynecologist approves of it, then you could resort to application of cold packs in the form of ice bags or wrapping up frozen vegetables in a cloth bag on the prone areas. You could repeat this for 7 – 10 times in a day. After a couple of day switch to heat pads application. This will help to ease out the strain. However care should be taken to not touch the abdomen area.

  1. Your pain is severe and is progressively worsening or is caused by trauma.
  2. You have fever, vaginal bleeding or a burning sensation when you pass urine.
  3. There is tingling or loss of sensation in one or both legs or you suddenly feel weak and cannot move.

  5. If the pain is accompanied with fever, nausea, vomiting or giddiness.

The Lotus seeds were traditionally cultivated, harvested and processed by the Mallah community in Bihar. They are not that easy to cultivate and require skilled farmers to plant, cultivate and process these little round balls.

These seeds are commonly found either in brown or white peel categories. The brown peel lotus seed is reaped once the head of the kernel is ripe and the white peel variety is reaped when the head of the kernel is fully green. How To Abort 1 Month Pregnancy

How to abort 1 month pregnancy? Abortion is a legal option today for mothers and although it may not be an easy decision, the fact that a mother can exercise her choice without any guilt, is relieving to say the least. While Mother Nature takes care of some pregnancies naturally through miscarriages; abortion, if you think about it, is an intervention. All the more reason, why due care needs to be exercised before taking a decision.

Abortions within a certain few weeks of pregnancy are said to be safe. However, you need to be well-informed about the safety of the procedures, whether natural or medical, before you make up your mind.

How to abort 1 month pregnancy

There are three major methods to abort a one-month old pregnancy – Natural, Medical and Surgical. While we will also look at some popular, natural methods in this blog, it is best you abort the pregnancy under expert medical advice to prevent possible health complications.

Very early symptoms of pregnancy at 1 week

Some of the common symptoms you may notice is

  • Tender or swollen breasts
  • Fatigue or Nausea
  • Slight Bleeding
  • Headches & moodswings
  • Food aversions or food cravings

Medical Abortion of a one-month old pregnancy

This involves an oral tablet taken under medical advice. The dosage and timing of the tablet should be exactly as prescribed. Be well informed of the results or changes you will see, feel and experience, and know the next steps. Make sure you inform your doctor about the changes so s(he) can closely monitor the procedure till the pregnancy is successfully aborted. Your doctor will also inform you about your pre and post-abortion health care, precautions you need to take and your physical and nutritional needs.

Mifepristone and Misoprostol are common (pregnancy stop tablets) unwanted pregnancy pills your gynec may recommend. But, we would recommend to consume any abortion tablets or pills only after consulting your doctor.

Surgical Abortion of a one-month old pregnancy

How To Abort 1 Month Pregnancy Surgically

The surgical method is one in which the abortion is planned with the help of your doctor. This is an intervention and cannot be done without your doctor and the clinic. Depending on the maturity of the pregnancy, the right method is chosen from among three: Aspiration, Dilation and Evacuation, and Dilation and Extraction. For a one-moth old pregnancy, the method chosen is aspiration. The procedure takes 10 to 15 minutes. Sedation and a local anaesthetic is used. Post procedure stay and rest in the clinic is advised, at least for a few hours. Aspiration is done by dilating the cervix and then suctioning out the foetus and placenta.

You should be aware that however simple, this procedure may not come without side effects and you need to watch out for these and report the same to your doctor. Nausea, blood clots, cramping, feeling faint, heavy bleeding, damage to the cervix and perforation of the uterus may occur. While we don’t meant o scare you off, it is important that you are aware and well informed of all the angles associated with the procedure.

How to stop pregnancy naturally

There are several ways to go for natural abortion, however, you need to have expert medical advice at hand even if you are following these methods. This is because, complications could arise and in the eventuality of a major health complication, only a doctor can help you.

Foods that can cause or help in abortion

Down the years we have heard from our grandmas and mothers about foods that aid abortion; in fact, this is the very reason that these foods are banned from a pregnant woman’s diet till she delivers a baby.

Papaya

How To Abort 1 Month Pregnancy Naturally

How to abort 1 month pregnancy? Both ripe and unripe forms of papaya if consumed in large quantities can lead to abortion. This is mainly due to the presence of latex (the milky white fluid) in the fruit. Latex has high levels of prostaglandin and oxytocin that aid in labour contractions. In addition, papaya has the papain enzyme that reduces the production of progesterone, which in turn impacts the pregnancy and helps in abortion. At the same time, papain helps in increasing the production of oestrogens. So, if you seek an abortion, befriend the papaya.

Pineapple

The green, yet-to-ripen pineapples are best for natural abortion. Pineapple has proteolytic enzyme which helps in breaking down the protein. If you consume 1-2 pineapples a day in the early stages of pregnancy, then the cervix is softened which causes bleeding, which results in abortion.

Goji berry, parsley and Vitamin C for abortion

Goji berry (dried), parsley contain Vitamin C. Vitamin C increases the level of oestrogen in blood and this leads to abortion. Parsley also has volatile oils that lead to uterine wall thinning resulting in uterine spasms and thus, abortion.

Chamomile Tea

This fragrant, popular tea is also a popular and effective natural method of abortion. This is due to its primary ingredient -thujone, which induces uterine contractions and leads to abortion. 2 to 3 cups a day should suffice for natural abortion.

Evening primrose oil helps in abortion

You may either consume a pill of the oil or massage large amounts on the cervix with it for results.

Cinnamon

Consumed in any form leads to abortion, be it a stick chewed or in the powered form. Take care not to over eat cinnamon in a hurry to terminate the pregnancy quickly as this may leave you with major health complications.

Acupuncture for natural abortion

If done correctly with an acupuncture expert, you can go in for a successful abortion. The right spots need to be punctured though and hence, care and caution need to be exercised before you choose this method

Sexual intercourse for abortion

Again, a natural way of aborting, sexual intercourse done multiple times during a day coupled with orgasm can result in a natural abortion.

Hot water showers for two weeks

Extremely hot water showers (102 degrees or more) may aid in abortion. Hot water sends the body in crisis mode so the attention to the foetus is taken away which result in abortion.

Massage for ending abortion

If you massage the belly with any oil with strokes positioned towards the pelvic area, this can result in natural abortion.

There are other natural methods like intense workouts with jogging, squats, sit ups, crunches, abdominal exercises that aid in abortion. Also, taking an aspirin 5 to 6 times a day for a few days may result in abortion. For this, medical advice is absolutely necessary.

While you may be successful in aborting an unwanted or unhealthy pregnancy, abortion can also have its effects on the mother and will usually take some time to heal fully. There also might be an emotional impact involved, which needs to be considered in post abortion care and healing.

Abortion comes with a set of pre and post care measures and is not a decision that can be taken very easily. Do exercise adequate care and caution before you go in for an abortion. Your health is top priority after all and do remember that your health is in your hands!
