An open letter from a child to the world of adults by Nandini

Dear Adult,

In case you have opened the envelope in surprise, wondering who this is from and what is this about, I am Nandini, 7 years old and want to say something to all of you on behalf of all my friends.

Now that I have your attention here is an open letter from a child to the world of adults by Nandini, first things first. Take a cup of warm tea or coffee or whatever you like and sit down at a corner. I really want to have a chat with you in peace, not when you are listening to me while doing your chores.

I know, it is very difficult for any adult today to manage work and little children like us. You work really hard and by the end of the day, you get so tired that you may not have any energy left to talk to me alone. I know, that you have a lot of work which we have no idea about. I know, that we can’t even help in making you feel better with all your workload.

But we, little children, where do we go if we want something? Who do we tell about our pains and worries when we haven’t even learnt to express our minds properly? Trust me, we don’t cry to make your life harder. In fact, when we cry, we are struggling to deal with our own selves to sort things out. It doesn’t really help if someone says, “Why are you crying? Stop crying and tell me, what’s the matter.” Or, “Good boy/girl don’t cry.” I mean, Come on! If we could tell, wouldn’t we have said it out clearly? And which child in the world doesn’t cry? Didn’t you cry when you were young? Why does the world of adults keep telling this piece of lies so often?! When we are having a really hard time struggling with our own desires and emotions, it would just help to calm us down in your lap and just be with us without saying a word. Trust me, we can feel what you feel. We can feel where we are safe. We can feel when your heart beats with love and care for us.

We sometimes wonder, what space do we really hold in your adult world full of so many things? Whatever we try to toy with, or pour out, or simply hold, we hear a loud “NO!”.

Trying to handle a glass of water by ourselves? “NO”.

Trying to jump off the bed? “NO”

Trying to pull that jar from the shelf? “NO”

Trying to pour water out of the bucket? “NO”

Trying to pull a clip out of our own hair or jump in the roadside puddle? “NO”

Pour paint on the floor on our body instead of the paper? “NO”

Knead the dough with flour all over the floor? “NO”

Can you tell me what are we supposed to do then?

You won’t allow us to help you with YOUR work.

You won’t allow us to try out OUR own work.

You won’t allow us to toy with things that are around us.

And if that’s not enough, you would ask us to sit quietly at a place. Sit there and do what? Participate in your boring adult conversations? When is the last time you sat like that without any work?

And Oh yes! Who told you that we love only toys and only toys are meant to be for children??

Let me be honest. Not half the toys made by adults are suitable for children. We need to mess with mud, we need to strike and blow, we need to break and crack, we need to turn things upside down, we need to pull and push, we need to taste, feel and see what you constantly hide from us! And that’s not our FAULT! We are made like that. You too, perhaps, were like that, is what God tells us.

So, please, dear adult, let us be like children. Don’t mind the mess in your house or wherever you are. If you are cleaning every day, we would learn to do that too as we grow up.

To make it easier for you and us, keep as less things as possible. What we LOVE most is FREE, OPEN spaces to twirl around, to crawl, to kick, to throw, to somersault…  That’s PLAY for us. That’s our WORK. We are trying hard to make sense of this large, complex world as much as you are trying to make sense of us. If you give us fixed objects to play in fixed, closed spaces, it doesn’t really help. We want to explore more…

We hope you realize that we forgive you quickly. Even after these stifling rules imposed on us, we still go back to you. Do you know why? Not because we are afraid, or we need security. Only because we LOVE you deeply and unconditionally. We KNOW that each of us make mistakes but we MUST be together. This is something, we are taught in the heavens, before we arrive. But we feel hurt when you take that for granted!

We are little humans of whom the adults can’t make much sense of, most of the times. And that’s perfectly fine. We are free souls, after all. But at least try to listen to us fully if you expect us to do that all the time.

Firstly, our neck hurts when we, always, have to look up and talk. Sometimes, it will be nice if you can bring me up, or, sit down, so that we can see your face and eyes when we talk.

Most often, we don’t say things that are big for you but may mean the world to us. We might blabber saying, “bite!” showing you a mosquito bites over 50 times.

You may feel annoyed with us if you are chatting with your friend and we drag you out asking to go home. That’s just because we feel trapped and bored to the place you have taken us; we don’t how else to put it across. Maybe, if you allow us to play outside in that area or give us our favourite object to toy with (may not be a toy), we can try to make peace.

It is just that our nagging, crankiness, crying, screaming, blabbering, cooing – everything is a part of the conversation we are trying to have with you. Just be with us as long as you can. You have no idea how happy we feel when you talk to us personally just like you do with any other adult we see! If we are doing it too often, maybe there’s something in our little bodies like – food, sleep or, some kind of uneasiness that’s bothering us.

Yes, we love junk food. But who introduced that to us? If you make it a rule to keep foods that our little bodies can handle in and around us, then that’s what we explore. Remember, we said that we love to explore! Anything too loud, too sweet, too salty, too colorful, sort of drowns us into them. We don’t know how to absorb it. We then become cranky and you wonder why.

We know that you love us like none other but we don’t need too many things. We just need YOU, fresh air, healthy food, lots of OPEN spaces and the freedom to EXPLORE. Our WORLD is that simple, really.

Ok, maybe not so simple for you! 😉 Let’s try to understand each other a little better, maybe?!

And thank you so much for trying to do so many things for us! Thank you for being so patient when we are like a mad puzzle for you, whose parts have gone missing. Thank you for your love and care in all your little ways!

Thank you for reading this letter 😊

Lots of love, hugs and best wishes,

From,

Nandini and the world of children.

PS: We would love to make it easier for you, however we can.

1.The Modest visitor –

Oh wow! What a noble deed. I am so proud of you!”

Our response – Will we be extra proud if a couple gave birth to their own baby or simply congratulate them?

 2.The Curious Visitor –

“Oh… (Followed by a long pause, trying to be neutral). A bit apologetically, yet reluctantly, “You don’t want to try any more on your own, is it?

Our response – Do we ever ask a couple about their next baby right at the birth or arrival of their first one?

3.The Inquisitive Visitor –

“Nice, but do you know his/her biological parents? Do they tell you about her background? What will happen if they come looking for his/her? What will you tell him/her when s/he grows up?”

Our response – Do we ask new parents when they exactly conceived? How was the couple’s mood that night? How will you tell your child about the process of his birth when s/he grows up?

4.The Trying-to-be-Concerned Visitor –

“What’s that mark on her/his face? Do you have his/her medical records? Is his/her weight normal?”

Our response – Do we ever look at a newborn baby and say that to a set of biological parents? Or do you just flood them with ‘Oh such an angel’ or, ‘Oh-so-cute’ kind of comments.

5.The Fill-Me-In-More Visitor –

“How long did it take you? How much money did you have to pay? Were you asked – boy or girl?”

Our response- This is like asking – How long did it take you to conceive? Since when did you plan? Did you have some mantra or did you follow the Chinese calendar for having a boy or a girl?

6.The Trying-to-be-Normal Visitor –

“She / He is blessed to have you as parents! You all look so beautiful together!”

Our response – That’s encouraging but isn’t any parent blessed to have any child instead of the other way round?

Why can’t it simply be – Congratulations! Or, All the best for your next innings! Or, Your bundle of joy looks so cute! Lots of love and blessings…etc..?

How does it matter where/how the baby has come from? Isn’t it important that the couple has started a new journey – one of joy, love and responsibility?!

Dear Sasu Ma, I Know I Might Not Be the Best Daughter-in-Law, But No One is Perfect

Dear Sasu Ma,

Yesterday was one of those days again. You felt I should have worn my mangalsutra to the family party when I really didn’t want to. I could see the slight disappointment on your face and for a moment, I felt a bit guilty again. I know you felt bad last week too, when I told you that your son (aka my husband) doesn’t need extra ghee on his paratha. I felt that maybe I should’ve just let it go, but I know that it is not ok for his health, so I chose to speak out my heart instead.

But then I thought, how long will this go on? At some point of time, you might stop having any expectations from me or I might stop caring altogether. Honestly, this was not how I envisioned our relationship. I expected us to have a modern MIL-DIL relationship where both of us have a healthy respect with a ‘live and let live’ philosophy. I’m sure you do too. But Indian relationships are never that simple, and a mother-in-law daughter-in-law relationship is like somersaulting on a tightrope. But how will we sail through this if we’re not honest about what we feel about each other?

So here’s what has been unsettling me about our relationship:

I know I’m not perfect, but who is?

I might not be the picture-perfect bahu that you imagined. I have my flaws and idiosyncrasies. The way I do certain things might not be to your liking. But who doesn’t have flaws? Best is to see how we can accept them. After all, getting used to new ways in a new house is a big change for me just as getting used to a new person doing things her way in the house might be for you.

We have our choices

I understand that during your time, things were different. Bahus were expected to listen to their in-laws always. But you might also agree that times now are different. We have our choices and we like to celebrate our individuality. For example, I don’t really like pairing the mangalsutra with jeans as I feel I don’t have to wear my mangalsutra always. Everyone knows that I’m happily married.

Please don’t make me feel guilty in front of my child

You might disagree with some of my parenting methods, and some of them might be wrong, but try not to make me feel guilty in front of my child. Parenting has evolved now and it is not healthy for her mind too.

Your son is a capable adult

When you say things like, “Oh my son didn’t take his lunch to work today.” “Oh, he ate so little last night,” it sends out the message that I’m not mothering him enough. But sasu ma, I don’t want to mother him, I’m his wife. He is an adult who is capable of taking his decisions and making his cup of tea. Yes, I’m concerned about his well-being too, but I dare not take the place of his mother, right?

Let’s not get to the ‘your parents’ thing

I know I’m the ‘bahu’ of this house, but I’m still my parents’ daughter. There might be several things that my parents say or do that you might not approve of, but to each his/her own. Since they’re the one who brought me into this world, questioning their behaviour doesn’t go down well with me.

I would honestly like to hear your side of the story as well. Unless we talk it out, how will we know how to untangle this relationship?

So I extend my hand (which is adorned with the bangles you gifted me) in friendship. Let’s talk!

SHOULD I GIVE MY BABY WHITE OR BROWN RICE

Rice is grown in several colours, shapes and sizes but perhaps the most popular amongst the other varieties are brown and white rice. Brown rice is a whole grain and in white rice the bran and germ are removed (these are the most nutritious part of the rice grain). For this reason brown rice is considered to be healthier, more nutritious and carb-rich too.

White vs. Brown Rice is an ongoing debate. Both white and brown rice are good for your child and pack in separate nutritional values. White rice is very rich in minerals such as calcium, iron and also is a rich source of vitamin such as niacin, vitamin D, thiamine and riboflavin.

Brown Rice is rich in fibers which aid digestion and its neurotransmitters prevent the occurrence of Alzheimer’s disease and various types of cancers.

In our fast paced life, when you seem worried about what to feed to your child, the below mentioned quick and healthy rice recipes can come to your rescue:

Some points to note here are that, the chili quotient in each of these recipes depends on your child’s tastes and preferences. Also restrict your child’s sugar and salt intake (no salt and sugar until the child turns a year old). Add fresh seasonal vegetables that are sourced and grown locally at places near you and for little babies you may steam/boil/puree vegetables to the desired consistency.

Postpartum Depression Is Real

Preetha has stepped onto the balcony for a breath of fresh air. Her 12th floor apartment offered a fabulous view of the national park and it had never failed to cheer her up. Yet The baby had just gone to sleep and Preetha was hoping, actually fervently praying, for at least 30 minutes of uninterrupted calm. A surge of guilt threatened to overwhelm her for wanting a ‘break’ from the baby and thats when she realized Postpartum Depression Is Real.

You are human too, her rational mind interjected. She quashed both the voices in her head, took a deep breath and leaned against the balcony railing. As she leaned closer to the railing, she had a strong urge to jump. Preetha was taken aback by how strong the impulse was. She tightened her grip on the railing and took deep breaths. In a minute, the feeling had passed. Preetha ran inside as fast as she could. As she sat there on the bed, drenched in sweat, heart pounding at galloping speed and tears pouring out of her eyes, she knew it. This was not an emotional reaction to a tiring night with the baby. Preetha knew that this was postpartum depression. There was no denying it anymore, she needed help. Preetha decided to book the next available appointment with a psychiatrist.

Postpartum depression is real.

According to the World Health Organisation, in developing nations like India close to 20% women experience some kind of a mental disorder after the birth of a baby. Add to that the kind of utter disregard women in our country show for their own physical and mental needs and you have the perfect combination for a spiraling mental health condition that goes unchecked. It is common for women to experience  ‘baby blues’ anytime after delivery till the baby turns about a month old. Typical symptoms include sudden outbursts, mood swings and a feeling of depression. But if these symptoms do not seem to be getting better or improving even after six weeks, then it is a sign. And if these lows are accompanied by thoughts of harming self or the baby, it is best to seek the help of a professional as you realize Postpartum Depression Is Real.

The social stigma associated with seeking help for mental health issues is tremendous. A lot of women are even made to feel guilty about having anything but saintly ‘feelings’ for the baby.Remember, it is your journey with your baby and if you need help with that, there is no shame is asking for it.And it all begins with the first and most important step – acceptance.

Here are a few other things that you can do to keep depression at bay:

  • Ask for help with the baby! You don’t need to be a super momma.
  • Make time for physical activities in your daily routine – exercise, walks or anything else that works.
  • Rest, rest and rest more.
  • Eat right and stay hydrated.
  • Meet other moms, join support groups and use these forums to express feelings and seek help!
  • Seek professional medical help from a practising psychiatrist if the symptoms are overwhelming

With all those voices speaking in your mind, telling you that you have gained weight and look ugly postpartum, depression can be quite a struggle. Don’t fall prey to them. You deserve to be loved and cherished. Contact BetterHelp today and allow their licensed and experienced therapists to help you through what can be a very difficult time in a mother’s life.

Most importantly, remember that postpartum depression is curable!
